What is Wayne Building - Part 8...

So, in an attempt to only have unique and interesting things in my office, I was looking for a model to place on the the wall instead of some standard Porsche showroom poster. I looked at one of these 962 1/5 scale models that some guy is building, but they seriously want $10,000 for one. I mean they are seriously cool, but not $10K cool. Here's a photo for reference:



So, I started looking around for something else, and came across this link to a German manufacturer of large-scale RC cars: FG bodies for rc car models : 1:5 long wheelbase wide version : Porsche GT1

I tried to buy one of them, but I was told that the body was long gone and unavailable (I've since found a source though). However, I did happen to find a body on eBay. The fellow was selling two bodies, a GT-1 and a CLK CTR - I emailed him to see if he would like to end the auction early and sell both as a set. I paid about $150 each, which is not terribly bad considering that the bodies sell for $225 new and they are no longer available from the factory. Here's the two bodies when the showed up in a *huge* box in the mail (notice I put a magazine and my foot in the photo for perspective):



First job was to get the right BBS wheels. My local 1/5 RC shop (yes, we actually have one here in Marina Del Rey) had a set in stock! I masked them off and painted them with some gold paint I got from OSH hardware. I was very pleased with how they came out.



I also got the special nuts with the flat bottom to them (I forget what they are called) so that they would best resemble the factory removal nuts:



The chassis for these cars are no longer available either, and I didn't really want to spend more money on the project, so I decided to make my own using some thin sheets of plywood, again available from OSH. That combined with some 1/4-20 long threaded rod and a few zip ties made the construction of my "chassis" pretty easy:



Here's the completed "chassis". I zip tied the "axles" to the plywood, and then for the rear wheels, I had to move them around a bit, so I just tacked them in place with some small wood screws. This seemed like the easiest and quickest way to go:



Then, I got some black felt (from Michaels Crafts), and taped it to the inside of the model, so that when you look through the windows, you don't see the plywood. I also taped black tape around the edges of the chassis near the wheels so that you wouldn't see the plywood if you happened to look through the wheel wells. I also got some metal screen from OSH and put it in the front of the model (it had a hole for something there, like a cooler), painted it black, and put some black felt behind it.

The only few remaining things to be done are to add some mirrors (coming in the mail) and also to paint the screws in the front "headlamps" yellow (I didn't have any yellow Testors paint in my current paint stash. Between looking for the body, getting the "art supplies", working on this and touching up the red paint on the body, it took me about 10 hours or so. Again, I'm very happy with the result. In a few months for one of the other rooms, I will do the same with the Mercedes (I have the "correct" wheels on order from Germany). I also have some more stickers coming in the same order - I might add some more to the car too.

The whole point of this is to hang it on my wall. So, I took down some of our "paintings" on the wall at home and hung this instead. I wonder what my wife will say when she sees it:

Nice! You mentioned testers paint for the headlights. I've used their products and they come out realistic on clear plastic. Another (cooler) option is to get a light kit. It's essentially a AA or C battery box with a switch and LEDs at the ends of some wires.

Make sure the models are easy to hang so you can take them down to play with --errr, I mean use to demonstrate and recreate racing scenarios.

Cool idea to hang a model car on the wall and "Warsteiner" is my favorite beer in Germany. I have some every time I go over there, my parents stock up on it as soon as I announce I'm coming.

That'll be fun to see. I feel a bit of office envy on the way, kinda like the garage envy that -- beyond all attempts to look away -- draws me to pics of Jack's garage.

Michaels has ' stained glasswindow paint ' in yellow that (used in very light coats) is very good for french fogs and LEMANS replication.

I've had great luck using it sparingly in the past even on 1:1 sized Porsches and BMWs

Paint the wall to look like a lane, long sweeping curve...give a helicopter point of view...roofs of farmhouses, etc.

Check out RS5 MODELSPORT if you'd like a full carbon fibre monocoque with proper running gear. Just one of the many manufacturers making 5th scale racing chassis.

Used to help a guy who raced these for the RS5 factory in IFMAR World Championship events around the world. We travelled to the USA, Switzerland, Germany and various other places for world championship events. Anything that is adjustable on a full scale car is adjustable on a 5th scale they are seriously cool bits of kit.

FG still make and sell the chassis's to your car and there are plenty of other manufacturers, the club I used to belong to here in Australia hosted the IFMAR World Championship in 2007, some of the top factory drivers are on 100K a year just to drive these model cars.

Wayne...you need a coffee table for your office...how about putting a shell engine together?
Build a shell only engine...perhaps with Webbers...and put an Acrylic top on it supported on the webber air horns.
I did a Ferrari 12 for a friend once...was incredible.
