930 Trans fitment in 86 Carrera
So I have done some quick research on the topic but haven't gotten any definitive answer. What needs to be done to fit a late 4 spd 930 trans into a 86 tub? Any major modification? I found some info on shortened trans but not sure if its for fitment in SC and earlier cars. Anyone done this and can shed some light. Was debating a 3.6-3.8L build but like the idea of a turbo charged 3.2-3.4L. With any spirited driving I don't think my 915 will stand up to it. Thanks.

The late 930 is an inch longer than the 915. An early 930 trans will physically fit, a late trans can be shortened, or the chassis can be modified.
I ran a 915 for a decade in front of a 300WHP 930 engine that later was bumped to 350WHP. No problems if you don't beat on it and don't track it.

Thanks Brian. Don't want to modified the body. So the early trans will bolt on no prob ... is that what your saying? Whats the difference between the early vs late 930 trans? Is one any better then another. Any idea on who/where to get a late trans shortened? I don't normal beat on things but Ive read some post that guys made mistakes and they became expensive.

It becomes a $$/effort deal. Early trans are hard to find and expensive when you do. Internally they are all the same. Modification requires total disassembly and machine work, more $$$. My logic was that the car would stay at 350WHP or lower and if I trashed the 915 I could stick in another one for a grand or so. I went through 2 in 14 years, the first one was stock and I broke it drag racing. The second one was built right with WEVO parts and took the 350WHP without issue.
Bottom line is if your engine is high HP or you want to beat on it look to spend $4K or more (total) to fit a 930 unit.

I too would love to throw a 930 box in my '87 Carrera.
I know the G-50 is very, very tough, but I still fear breaking it. |

Thanks for the info Brian. Yeah, Im worried about breaking it. My other car is a 65 Cobra. I spent good money to make sure I could thrash it with out every having to worry about it. IMHO it well worth it. Im on the hunt for a 930 trans I guess. Ive read that some guys change out the gears to make it more drivable and get out of the hole faster so maybe I can find a case and have it built if it needs to be machined to fit. Thanks again.
