My 1971 911 may be too far gone to restore... NOW what?
it has rust on top of rust. No floors, engine doesn't run, everything is corroded and needing lots of work. It would cost probably two to three times what the car is worth to restore. So now what? Part it out? Sell it as a whole?
It is all original matching numbers with factory original gas burner wheels. engine turns but that's it. Any suggestions?? ![]()

I think this one needs a whole lot of restoring ... probably not worth the time or money ...
Cheers ! Phil

My 2 cents:
Take a ton of pics, document what you know of the history and provide specifics like engine #, transmission, VIN, color and trim, etc. Highlight the important areas like torsion bars. Then post on the Pelican cars for sale section. Be willing to work with potential buyers on shipping. It looks like it can roll onto a trailer. There might be a very, very brave soul out there that is willing to take this project on and save another 911. Give it a couple of weeks. If there is no buyer then part it out as you'll already have the pics. |

Hmmm if it were me I would drop the motor, trans and suspension, unbolt everything else, clean it all up and have a look. Then make a plan to get it back together, maybe a bastard hotrod with a cheap paint job would be fun....or sell the parts or a package. Hard to see what you have looking at it in that condition, its over whelming, once you get it all apart.....it might sit in boxes for ten years...I dont know sort of talked my self out of it.

If you are attached to the car, I say go for it. These early cars are getting very valuable and, honestly, from those pictures, it doesn't look too far gone to fix. Its not uncommon at all to have to replace floors and other rusted parts. Take some more pictures of it as suggested but don't be too discouraged. Looks like a fun project to me.

Depends on your location. The 356 nuts in CA wouldn't twice about that kind of restoration. But you'd make more cash parting it out....might take a while and you'd bust a couple knuckles......depends on what you want to do.
It's a shame someone didn't at cover the damn thing.

I say go for it, yes its going to be a lot of work, yes it will cost a lot, but I look at it this way. For every 911 that gets parted and cut up, that's another one gone for ever. They are not making the old body styles any more (obviously) so to me every one is precious.
Regards Dave

That is not worth restoring! Sell it as a whole to someone who will then part it. Parting it out sounds like more effort than its worth.

Make a well-aged patina-ed rat rod-ish Porsche. Drive it anywhere. Park it anywhere. No worries. A 'beater' Porsche.

You guys who always say these cars are too far gone to restore crack me up.
![]() How about a '34 Ford shell out in a pasture with just a body? That's how most start as a build I just hate to see non-wrecked cars parted out..... These cars will never be investments......that's the only way to look at it IMO.

After owning for 4 years, I feel the opposite. Should of trashed the 996 and protected the Carrera.

I have seen "restorations" where the only carry over is the VIN plate practically. If the car is matching numbers and has an interesting option like the gas burners I bet you could find someone who wants to restore it. The numbers alone are worth a lot. Especially if it is an S. So, with this being a T maybe not so much. But I would post it over on the Early 911S Registry. See if there are any takers.

I'd say Do Not take it appart unless you have decided to part it, or guarantee yourself that you will finish it.
A big part of the collectable value is that a project seeker will appreciate that everything is there, vs sifting through boxes hoping that nothing important is missing |

There is no reason the feel bad if you feel the car best serves the community as an organ donor. Your car can help 50 other cars be healthier.

Tippy,
That's my plan as well, I'm going to look for a 996 to thrash on and be kind (mostly) to the '84.
