How many guys does it take to change a light bulb?
Ok, I'm felling a bit stupid but I can not remove the light bulb from a rectangular Bosch under bumper fog light on my 76 Targa. Is there some secret that I don't know about?

I think the bulbs have a base that rest on the back side of the unit the bulb fits through. You have to remove the unit to access. The bulbs pretty regularly will be ok and lose connection contact from my experience. Things can be wiggled around to bring it back to life - of course, from the back side.

Thanks for the help Bob, it's pretty easy when you know what do. As you said, you simply remove the entire inner assembly by prying out the rubber gasket and removing the bulb assembly from behind (you can't remove just the bulb). One electrical connection is a spade connector and the other (red) is a heat shrink butt connector. Another question, does anyone know if there is a chrome type of spray paint available to recoat the plastic bulb reflector?

Good job!
They would probably have to be stripped and re-coated to be done right. Polishing up what you have with a mild polish compound or buying a used pair would be superior to any spray can coating. To really spiff them up you can re-paint the black parts and buy new lenses. Here is a link to fog light function for what it's worth: VClassics Interactive - Archive |

Glad someone gave your the "straight answer". The correct answer is:
1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed 14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently 7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs 1 to suggest we move it to the Lighting section 2 to argue then move it to the Electricals section 7 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs 5 to flame the spell checkers 3 to correct spelling/grammar flames 6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb" ... another 6 to condemn those 6 as stupid 2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp" 15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that "light bulb" is perfectly correct 19 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a lightbulb forum 11 to defend the posting to this forum saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant to this forum 36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty 7 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs 4 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL's 3 to post about links they found from the URL's that are relevant to this group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group 13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add "Me too" 5 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy 4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?" 13 to say "do a Google search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs" 1 conspiracy theorist to proclaim that light bulbs are really a Enviro-wacko tactic. 1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now and start it all over again. ![]()

Thanks Bob, very interesting link. The fog light in my photo is the used one that I just bought (the one on my car had a cracked lens) I'll check out the reflector and the bulb assembly and hopefully they are in better condition than the used fog light and do a swap.

Jeez, Matt. Untwist the panties. Harry's response is very appropriate to any internet forum and I don't believe he was targeting you. Remember to breathe slowly.

Who peed in Matt's cereal?
Harry was making a joke, not attacking you. Relax, Francis.

Not to worry, just poking a bit of fun at the question. I am sorry if you thought I was poking fun at you. Your question was quite legitimate. In fact, there are no dumb questions. I would have provided the "straight" answer if not for the fact that your question was already answered. Besides, I have not been able to use the "How many Pelicans" joke ofr a while and, well, you just kind of fell into it. Light in Emergency Flasher Switch

Thanks HarryD, I did a search before I posted the question and wasn't able to find the answer.
I entered the following "how to change fog light bulb" I'm sure if I spent 1/2 hour searching I probably would have found the answer. Instead I spent a 1/2 hour disassembling the fog light, removing the bulb, cleaning connections and repainting the housing. BTW, the fog light is the least of my worries, I'm in the process of firing up my 76 Targa that's been sitting for close to 20 years. Still cleaning and rebuilding all the fuel components! Should be ready to turn the key in a week or two.
