Went over a bump, engine died
As I'm sitting here waiting for a tow, I figured I'd ask you guys for your thoughts.
I was driving along, everything was fine. Went over a rise (not even a sharp bump) and the engine died. It cranks but doesn't turn over. I don't hear the fuel pump when I turn the key (typically hear a whine). Moved the relays around (doesn't seem to be a fuel pump-specific relay) and jiggled and tightened the fuses. Nada. Any thoughts on the problem or ways to diagnose? Thanks |

also check in the rear engine compartment , unplug the the engine harness and plug it back in , its under the fuse cover , it's a big plug in harness on the side, I happened to me and a friend before and that worked, good luck

First time I'm going to say this but it does sound like the DME/fuel pump relay under your seat may have died.

Check your fuel pump relay under the front hood. Its in the fuse box, and is a big round, usually red, relay. These rattle loose and will cause your car to die. After you re-seat it you can either tape it in, or bend the pins slightly outward / inward to keep it from rattling out again.

Happened to me this am. Car started, idle stabilized and then went hunting. Could not rev the motor. One of the electric plug ins, center left, into the FI system was a bit loose. Pushed it in and ran great. Good luck. Steve

Appreciate all the replies. Turns out the fuel pump gave up after 23 years of faithful service.
As it turns out, mike from formula motorsports was out test driving a customers 996 and saw me on the side of the road. I'm at their shop now, having been fed and entertained while they diagnosed the issue, then ordered, received and installed the part. About to take off now. |

A breakdown does not get any better than that unless the car mysteriously starts and gets you home. Steve
