3 litre troubles
I pulled my car out of storage and have put about three tanks of fuel through it . It was running great .
I stalled it and was having trouble restarting it.....it seemed flooded after about 30 minutes of trying to restart it every 5-10 min or so it started . The only way it would fire was when i held it to the floor...it finally started and i made it home. Two days later i tried to start it and it fires and sputters for a few seconds and then dies . I was thinking maybe a leaky injector but now when i hold it to the floor it does not fire . I think I hear the pump making a different noise when ignition is on.... it could be my imagination. Is the pump the logical place to start ? Any input would be appreciated . thanks Jon

Did you run your fuel all the way to empty or near empty?
Fuel pumps have a tendency to go bad when starved for fuel.

When it won’t start, you should confirm it has ignition spark. Do you have access to CIS fuel/control pressure gauge? This will tell you where to look. From your symptoms, I suspect fuel supply issues. A good first step would be to drain all the fuel and remove the screen filter in the center-bottom of the tank. Inspect and clean the screen. If even the hint of debris, summarily replace the fuel filter in the engine compartment. Refill with fresh premium gas. Even if this does not cure the problem, you have done some useful maintenance. Another possibility is the fuel pump is failing. With the fresh gas, make yourself a long hose that connects to the outlet of the fuel filter. Route the hose to the gas fill on the LF fender, allowing some slack. Run the fuel pump continuously circulating the fuel (you may have to raise the sensor plate in the CIS to get the pump to run). Take a ‘calibrated’ container and measure the fuel flow for some exact (measured) time (~1 minute). Calculate the flow rate ((volume collected) / (time)) = (flow rate (ml/min)). Spec is 1500 ml/min minimum. This will confirm the pump is capable of flowing the necessary fuel. The only way to properly diagnose a failing fuel pump is to measure the pressures while the 911 won’t start. There are other possibilities but this will cover basics. Best, Grady

Ditto Slasher on the pump, I ran mine dry and burnt my pump. Accel to the floor to start means it could be flooded, pull a plug.

Thanks all
I will get at it this weekend, hopefully.....I generally dont let it get too low on fuel but the previous tank of gas went below a quarter and not sure how accurate the guage is . It runs for a couple of seconds so I think it is in the fuel delivery somewhere . Thanks again Jon

I think I have the same problem (see my new post...) except that my fuel tank never got that low and I don't think that it backfired... still trying to start it.

Sounds like the accumulator. When it fails to start try lifting on the air flow sensor plate. You should hear the injectors humming. THen it should start.

How did it run when before you put it away? if it ran ok then just start with something simple. Your car is injected so you never hold it to the floor when trying to start.just turn the key and let it start,then let it run rough or? untill it clears up. If you have already run 3 tanks of fuel through it then it was running fine for a bit. you could have now packed your fuel filter .thats the first thing and easiest to change. Your pump may be sounding diff because it is trying to force fuel through a clogged filter. BTW grew up on Mississipi lake .played hockey in Carp. Beautifull little town. Carp is 30min or so west of Ottawa. |
