smoking problem.
one of my heat exchangers is smoking right where the arrow is. The smoke comes from the join. Any ideas if a bad return valves can cause this? I know they were replaced a few years ago. I am also concerned that the car might not pass emissions since it is smoking a bit.
The smoking happens while the car is running. I cleanned the underneath of the engine in order to narrow down the problem. I let it idle for a good while. Yet i could not find any oil leaks that affected the top of the passenger heat exchanger (smoking exchanger). ![]()

Looks wet right here (red arrow) bad oil cooler seals (among other things above there) will drip right where your arrow is pointing.

Smoke coming from that area would be from an external leak. The header tubes have a sheet metal shroud around them for heat to the passenger compartmenet. If it was the valve guides it would smoke from the end of the exhaust pipe. It should not effect emmisions readings.

Pete,
the pic was taken shortly after washing the engine. That would explain the some of the wetness. There was a lot of grime and grease down there. I did jack up the car and spent a while under the car looking for an external source. I was unable to find anything. E Sully, now that you mention it. i did notice a light smoke coming out of the exhaust. It is not consistent. But it does happen every few minutes.

Got tired of my Pcar smelling like an oil refinery, so.
I just replaced my oil cooler which had a pinhole leak and oozed out small amounts of oil, but only when the engine was hot! I had precisely the same oil drips on the heat exchangers in the same place as your pics, which provided a nice small amount of smoke. Not too visible, but it sure did stink! If not a very slow leak from your cooler, it's probably one of the cooler oil seals. The oil is definately dripping from above onto the HE. Could be dripping down from the Bermuda triangle of oil leaks i.e. oil pressure sender, thermostat oring and rear oil breather hose.

My car leaked oil from the Triangle of death and the oil cooler seals from the day i bought it ...
In three years it managed to ruin my driveway but after i removed my engine last Fall i replaced every gasket, seal and "O"ring that i could get my hands on and my car is bone dry now ! I had the same symptoms as you as the oil travels incredibly when the car is moving ![]() Cheers ! Phil
