Engine Rebuild Suggestions

Hello y'all,

It's been a long time since I've frequented these parts. Alas, life gets in the way. I could use some specific help/suggestions on engine rebuild costs/recommendations.

Car is a 1976 and engine is a 1981 3.0. I tried the rebuild the '76 engine and failed. Purchased the 3.0 engine and plugged it into the '76 chassis and had an absolute ball driving it. For a whole two months. Then THREE head studs broke. I'm a patience guy, but when faced with the decision about what to do next (after one failed engine rebuild and purchasing another) I've realized, I need some help.

I live in the East Bay (Walnut Creek/Concord area) of the SF Bay area and am looking for someone to rebuild the 3.0 and plug it into the car. I've contacted Tom Amon (very nice guy) who has given me his quote which was done about a year ago and been recently adjusted due to ... inflation? Either way I'd like to request 1-2 more quotes and get some feedback here as to what to do next. I appreciate those who will encourage me to rebuild again. But reality has set in and I really want to drive this car again instead of just working on it all the time.

All help mucho appreciated!

How many miles on this engine? You may only need to do a top end job. Replace the lower studs with steel, do a valve job and replace rings. I would charge around 3,000 labor and probably $1,000 in parts. I could do it for you but alas, I live in New York.

Gracias for the speedy reply. About 150K miles. I agree with your top end suggestion. Do you have any friends out west, here? That price seems very reasonable.

Not where you are but not that far away if you hop over to I-5 and go south: Supertec

Go north instead: Rennsport

Both highly recommended and good people.

Forgive me all. I'm hard pressed to believe there are not more good rebuild shops in the East Bay or the SF Bay proper. Am I wrong?

Not exactly an answer, but something to think about.

How about waiting to see if the senate bill passes and you turn smog exempt, would open up a ton of very cool options for you that would impact your build sheet.

From reading the bill, it will be stuck at year 81 to be exempt, and no rolling model year exemption (which makes me sad).
