How many times has your P car made you bleed?

As I sit here typing this post, I'm nursing a fat thumb that I mashed yesterday in in the process of torquing my just installed transmission mounts. Inevitably whether it's the loosening up a bolt that's remained untouched for 25 years or installing the latest of the never ending must have upgrades... my car manages to every once in a while make me bleed.

So in honor of that, I thought I'd start a thread where we can post our temporary wrenching medals of honors. For the more masochistic amongst us at least.

I'm starting out with a small one, but the thumb bruise doesn't show up well on the phone pic, and it technically didn't make me bleed like this pinky one did.

I have lost lots of blood while working on cars. I finally broke down and bought some mechanics gloves. Anytime I am doing something that has much potential for a busted knuckle I put on the gloves. They have saved me a lot of pain.

Seems to happen monthly, like clockwork.

If I even look at my car I bleed I now use thin leather gloves to protect my hands whenever possible.

+1. Answer to question is every time, I end up removing the gloves to feel something better, and put them back on after the bleed. No current pictures.

Every time I don't wear gloves I ended up cutting myself. Even though I only wear thick latex surgical gloves it's surprising how well the hands are protected.

I finally bought a pair of THICK surgical gloves, not the chincy ones you get from Autozone, and it is a night and day difference. I took a screw driver to the thumb and was sure I'd find it sticking out the other side, but the glove didn't even budge, and my thumb was fine!

If only they made something for my wallet so it could stop bleeding money every time I'm around the car

Let’s see …
I have owned my ’68 911 for almost exactly 16,060 days, give or take a few.
Never has it shed my blood. Not a drop. Hardly ever a scratch.
Mostly due to my TLC and patience.
Hardly ever has there been ‘work in crises’ which usually leads to injury to both.

That said, I have owned several jealous competitors to my ’68.
They have attempted some revenge.
Fortunately, I’m a clever sort and have minimized their attacks.
Hardly more than a few bruised knuckles.

I have seen some incredible undiserved attacks of 911s on their caretakers.
One, having months of TLC from its caretaker crew, attacked the chief at a critical moment.
In the pre-grid the 911 was attacked by a passing car, ripping off the open passenger door.
Not taking the abuse lightly, the 911 (a 935K3) allowed its primary caretaker (Jerry Woods) to put the power drill bit through his hand.
At least the 911 felt sorry enough to work hard and finish the race in proper form. Top ten as I recall.

So …
When you feel abused by your nice 6-cylinder ‘friend’, remember who turns the wrenches.
Slow and steady. Patients pays off.
When you find yourself frustrated or ‘in a hurry’, step back and take a breath.
Your knuckles will appreciate the relief.

Best,
Grady

I have very large hands, while removing the alt. Got hung up for about 1/2 hr. Thought I would have to cut it off at the wrist!

Caught for 1/2 hour. Wow, now the question is if 911 was called would you tell them to cut the shroud off or your hand?

Wise words Grady... every drop has been my fault for some reason or other, sometimes because of the angle or the tools or that I should just be thinking more and rushing less as you say.

Do you think now that you've shared that bit of wisdom, I'll never bleed again?

Best . . .

Great story and good advice, Mr. Clay. I never get anything right if I am in a hurry.

Gloves suck! Nothing beats as nature intended!
Most times I have been injured it's been due to not having the right tool. And anything involving a series Landrover.

This thread could well go in a disturbing direction as uber-competitive males go head to head online.
Proper reality TV! Sheetmetal Wars!

I heard almost the same line in a PSA for teen pregnancy prevention.

This was the result of changing my engine mounts last year. Smashed against some sharp bracket or another. Its actually worse than it looks, left a scar. I considered it a good bonding moment between man and car
