List of Possible mods for G50
Now that I have owned my 911 for about six months, I have the mod bug. Love the car but I want more throttle response, smoother/quicker shifting and more exhaust sound. The car is fun the drive but I am honestly just a little underwhelmed. The plan is to keep the car looking stock but do some reversible mods to make it more fun to drive. The car is a coupe with 42,000 miles and is in very nice original condition. Here is what I am looking to do - any/all feedback appreciated.
JWest G50 short shift kit. Steve Wong Chip Fabspeed Euro pre muffler/cat delete. Fabspeed Supercup exhaust. The only part I am really debating is the muffler. Not sure how loud to go. I really want to hear it but wonder if the Super Cup will be too much. Car is used for weekend rides and I commute with it a couple of times a week during the warm weather months.

All that and still have a 1 in muffler??.....let it breathe and put SSI or headers.

Chip replacement definitely improves the throttle response. Still, the throttle response is physically/mechanically hindered by the clutch. The G50 clutch is a whopper heavy. Changing to a lightweight aluminum alloy clutch helps a ton
Honestly the shifter isn't going to help with smoothness. That is, unless there's some worn bushings in the shifter assembly. Bumpy shifting is often worn synchronizer assembly in the trans. Or, old gear oil that hasn't been changed in who knows how long.

Short shift kit is not going to make shifting smoother or faster, it will just make it travel slightly less and require more effort.
For throttle response, the chip will make a difference. If you really want to wake the car up, change the 9/31 ring and pinion to an 8/31, if that's possible. I'd also echo the suggestion to go with headers and a 2-in muffler, but not SSIs. SSIs have a 1.5" primary and are too small for 3.2L. They were designed for 2.7L engines, and help a bit on the 3.0 but they're too small for anything larger. You want 1 5/8" primaries on a 3.2. |

My 88 has the following: Steve Wong chip, JWest G50 short shift kit, M&K pre-muffler, and M&K 1in/1out muffler. The chip makes a big difference and is well worth the money. The JWest kit made a big difference in shift quality for me, shorter more precise. I had a few other mufflers on the car and by far I prefer the M&K with the pre-muff. Sound is just right, not too loud. There are other threads on this. This all works for me. Maybe different for you. If I wanted to spend the $$$ I would go the 3.5 route.

Supercharging a 3.2 is an interesting idea. What manufacturer would you recommend? Paxton? Any experience doing this? I googled a bit and see very little on supercharging 3.2 Carreras.

For your intended purpose/use, I think the cat eliminator/premuffler and a sport muffler is fine. You won't feel a ton of gains with headers w/out doing some tuning. If you want improved sound and some additional pep, uncorking the stock exhaust with a premuffler and sport muffler does the job nicely.
The sport muffler is key to getting an improved tone. The stock banana muffler does a very good job of reducing the sound on the engine. If you watch from the side of the road a stock 911 Carrera 3.2 or SC blow by you at high rpms, what you hear most of is fan noise and wind noise. The exhaust noise is more of a whooshing blowing sound. Considering aftermarket mufflers are so expensive, our group of guys decided that's just too hard a pill to swallow- $700+ for a new muffler. No thanks. We found a decent sized universal muffler from Dynomax and had some pipes bent to fit it at a friend's Meineke repair shop. Made a hanger bracket with some angle steel along with large band clamps around the muffler case (like B&B or M&K style) and worked pretty good. Sounds sorta like a small V-8? No I haven't seen one myself. Seems to be a fairly prevalent thing for our engines.
I recall Jack Olsen went so far as to cut the collectors off his B&B headers, shorten the pipe lengths, reattach collectors, then install a dual in dual out crossover style muffer (rectangular muffler like used on Buick turbo V-6) and install smaller tailpipes to tune the sound. He posted his work in a detailed fashion like he always does. Also I think the Triad West muffler system might have been a good system to arrest resonance. Do a search for that too.

Thanks Kevin. Definitely not interested in more than a couple of simple bolt ons. Now really just debating what muffler to use, how loud/aggressive.

Took the plunge.
After reading lots of reviews and youtube clips, settled on M&K one in/one out muffler and pre muffler. Then ordered a Steve Wong chip for it. I was afraid the Supercup exhaust might be too loud for me. I will get this stuff installed and then maybe do the short shift kit after. M&K seems to get really strong reviews and their sport muffler seems to be on the aggressive side without being obnoxious. Can't wait to see what this does to me car. I will post again once it is all in.
