Best way to loosen up a stuck engine that was sitting 20 years ?

Hi

I need to loosen up a 911T motor that has sat for the last 20 years in dry storage , actually its still in the car....

If it was just a straight 6 Chevy motor I would dump some Marvel oil down the spark plug hole and let it sit ,

But that is not going to work on a flat 6 unless I roll the car over on its side

So any ideas without pulling the motor ( its a sportomatic too)

Thanks for your help

Oil in the spark plug holes is your best bet, however, if it was my motor and I cared about it, I would tear it down.

It ain't a chevy. You're looking at a complete tear down, or take your chances on it being your next boat anchor.

If you absolutely must free it up without teardown use the car. Keep it in gear and rock car back and forth after shooting some ATF or Marvel into cylinders for a few days.

I got a VW whose rings, at least some of them, had probably rusted to a cylinder or cylinders, to torn over easily with Marvel and patience. Turn the motor over with a wrench on the nut on the end of the crank. When you start to get some movement, you could use the tool which engages the fan pulley, with a finger on the v belt to keep it tight, if the wrench part is awkward for your setup. 5th gear and rocking would do also. Eventually you will break whatever is stuck loose without breaking anything not already broken or dysfunctional.

I even got my VW to run. I had to put duct tape over most of each carb inlet, as a kind of choke, to keep it running, but it ran. Of course, to be a useful motor its going to need new Ps and Cs (not a big expense for a VW, rather different for a 911, even an old T. But you should be able to score some used Ps and Cs which are serviceable.

Though, despite having iron cylinders and steel rings, maybe more water got into my VW sitting outside and not all that well prepared for hibernation over 20 years than into your T's motor. You have to try it and see.

You might try squirting compressed air through a tube into each cylinder after squirting Marvel in - might help move some up. But rust and crud are most likely to be down at the bottom, no? So I'd not worry all that much about full circumference coverage to start with.

That is, if you really want to get things moving around before you, most likely, pull the engine.

I guess PB Blaster or Kroil sprayed in with the tube to get it up high would be worth a try. Not WD40. Put it in gear and try to break it after a few days. Good luck and I hope it works and runs good once started. I think you might be looking at broken rings even if it does come loose tho.

Thanks for your ideas

I have the time to soak it and let it sit ,

If I take it out and apart I will still have stuck pistons , yes at least I can point each side "up" on the engine stand but they will still be stuck to start !

Can I rock it if Sportomatic ? I thought the torque converter would stop me from doing that

You'll need to crank on it using the nut on the pulley or crank.

Have anyone used a video camera scope that is small enough to go down the spark plug hole ?

can you see very much ? does it have some kind of a light ? can you see the valves to see if they are burned

is there a good one for $100-$150 ?

thanks

Also have heard of Tranny fluid and graphite slurry poured into the cylinders... or in this part, squirted, since its horizontal....

Old guys that used to race in the 60's would use that to break rings loose, as well as a slurry of graphite powder, Tranny fluid and water to our down the throat of a running carb to clean stuck rings, get rid of carbon, etc...

You might as well start trying to unstick things now. You won't be able to disassemble the engine without doing that if rings are stuck to cylinders. You can get the heads off, which would allow more complete immersion, but you will need to be able to pull the cylinders off to get the case apart (unless you just want to smash them). So why not start now. The longer the soaking, the better.

Parts cleaner (varsol) and tranny fluid mixed is what the 70 year old Heavy duty mechanic at work swears by.

A useful trick to free up old tractor engines that have been sitting seized for years is putting whatever lube/diesel/penetrator mix in the bores and then put a jack on the end of a spanner on the front pulley nut and take the weight of the tractor on the spanner.

Then just let time and the penetrator juice do the loosening, within a couple of weeks even the worst case will start to move.

Perhaps you could try a variation of that?

Or for worst case scenario....http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=84354.0

Or for worst case scenario....A great technique to remove stuck pistons
Good ideas if its been outside and got water in it ,
I also have a 1951 VW bug motor that I need to take apart , it had water in it , so taking it apart will be fun But at least with the VW motor I am not trying to save the pistons and cylinders !
