There's always the 3.6L route.

There's a crashed 993TT on ebay right now. Use that motor...

SSI Exhaust and a normal muffler made the most change in my car to date with the motor. New Bilsteins did the most to improve the suspension.

Remember that every last horse the motor has is worthless until the suspension can put it to use on the road!

The cheapest way would be to take all of the unnecessary bits out to start chipping away at that power/weight ratio.

Here are a few items you might consider parting with:

complete A/C system.
back seats.
power window assemblies.
power door lock system.
rear sound pads (under back seats and parcel shelf).
rear parcel shelf.
carpet.
spare tire (to be replaced with a can of "fix-o-flat").
etc,etc,etc...

Some other (more costly) ideas:

replace (very heavy) front seats with fixed back Sparco's/Recaro's.
replace door panels/pockets/handles with RS-type panels.
fiberglass/carbon bumpers.
SSI's, and sport muffler.
mass flow air sensor.
Unichip.

Extreme:

fiberglass/carbon doors, hood, & fenders.
replace glass with Lexan.
Whipple supercharger.
3.6L 964 engine.

Just be sure to keep anything you remove boxed up and stored somewhere, in case you need to put it all back for resale.

Lightbulb

Different cams,
SSI or headers
Better muffler
3.4 pistons
Mass flow throttle body
Different chip for the DME
Switch to carbs

The above changes need to be done in a carefull manner to insure the max HP increase.

Also, if the ring gear could be change to 7:31

If you want to beat the likes of a Maxima, you'll need to have a very flat torque curve. 80% of it's 217 ftlbs is available at 1600rpm.

Do a search on low end torque. I have posted on this subject in the past, but it does not seem to be as popular or glamorous a subject as spending big bucks on HP.

If all else fails....use a RATO rocket (Rocket Assisted Take Off)...only problem...it fires for 14 seconds...solid fuel...once it's ignited it keeps on truckin' !
Sorry....my feeble attempt at humour.

Look, my 84 kicks @ss up one side and down the other. Here's all you have to do. It's easy
1) Chip it
2) Remove Cat get Bursch or make your own less constipating exhaust. If it ain't loud, then it's not working.
3) Remove the AC and all hoses blowers, and condensers. You'll save 75 lbs or more right there
4) Get a short shifter kit made by Porsche
5) Remove the sound deadening material in the back. Including the ***** 'neath the seats. Take seat tops off. Total weight loss right there is 28 lbs.
6) Don't race with your woman in the car unless she's packing less than a buck 10
6a) If not, get another one. Saying things like "Oh ***** thanks to you I just lost to that stupid Eclipse. Man, I bust my ass getting the weight on this car down and you're packing more mass than bread truck. D-I-E-T."
6b) I'll have the Sloppy Super Burger....Um, she'll have a salad.
6c) Um, no. We won't be eating dessert tonight thank you...not with Rice boy running around screaming about how he kicked our @ss. This is a TEAM, okay? If you're packin' 2 sides of beef, ham, eggs and god only knows what else, how will we ever succeed?
6d) There is no 'Dessert' in 'Team' is there? Well, is there?

Too bad it takes so much work to make a Porsche go faster. To make an import go faster all you have to do is.

1. Install a giant coffee can exaust tail.
2. Put a 3ft tall wing on it.

Now you have the fastest car on the block.

But seriously I would just ignore those silly imports. Take your porsche to the track and see what the car was really built for. The you will see that suspension and balance are more important than outright speed. But of course speed is always a factor. I would start with exaust, and weight loss.

Just a word of warning, there's always going to be something faster. I got beat (really just matched speed. I could stick with but couldn't pass) by a rusty honda civic that had a turbo. If you want to make it go faster weight loss seems to be the most common/least expensive route. The other thing, were you shifting at red line? If you want to beat the riceys you better be shifting at about the point you hit the limiter.

Yep...."adding lightness" is the cheapest way. But as a side note as quick as an 84 was, even in it's day, it was not a 1/4 miler. From my understanding, a Subie STI is a pretty potent machine and no matter what you do, there will always be something that comes along that is much faster.

Silly imports?? The Porsche is an import! The modern cars will beat us every time. Soccer mom cars have 300 H.P. now. Heck, the mid range motor on a Dodge charger has 365 H.P. 300 is the new normal. The non performance 2015 Stang has 300 H.P. Just drive your 911 and have fun. I guess you could spend thousands of dollars and it will still be way slower than a Tesla.
