A Very Quick 3.6 Swap Build Thread

It’s been some time since I have been active on Pelican and in the Porsche community since the sale of my beloved 993 this time last year. The 993’s sale did make room for a more family friendly vehicle for my new daughter and help fund some home upgrades. This did however create the problem of our garage being an awfully boring place to visit!

After owning an 83 SC with a 3.6 swap built by a previous owner prior to my 993 I decided that this was the car I’ve missed owning more than any car previous and It was something that I had to have back!

Over the winter I have been gathering parts so that when the “right” car came my way it would be a pretty easy task to get another SC or Carrera with a 3.6. I was able to source a 3.6 from a totaled 1990 cab that came in to a friend’s body shop. I have been gathering parts from Pelican, local vendors, and the custom 3.6 bits from Patrick Motorsports.

I have also been very fortunate to have a local Porsche tuning shop help with the build of the motor and share in the excitement of putting another 3.6 in a 80’s 911. The guys over at 3zero3 motorsports have done a great job getting the motor freshened up and ready for its new home!

Luckily I was also able to find and purchase a 1983 SC sunroof coupe at a local auction where a friend of mine works as my motor was nearing completion.

The SC will be on its way over to 3zero3 Motorsports tomorrow afternoon for my 3.6 to meet its new home. I will do my best to document the process for those interested and if you are in the Denver area and would like to drop by to check it out Max has said that anyone is welcome to and take a look at this or any of the other projects they have going on.

Here are some of the pictures of what has been done to the motor so far

Sub'ed. Looking good. These old cars with a 3.6 are really obnoxious-I love it!! Any mods to the 3.6 internals?

Going to be all stock on the motor with the exception of some Eibach valve springs

What are your plans for an exhaust system?

Nice project, it looks like you found a seriously nice SC..... I am surprised you found it at an auction. Is it common in your area to find early porsches at the auction?

I need for the car to pass emissions and would like heat. I am using a slightly modified 3.2 system with a M&K catbypass that I will swap out with a factory cat when I take it in for testing. You can see in the picture where the heat exchanger section mounts has been ground down so that it will mate with the 3.6 heads. I did need to use a little longer stud, but they fit perfectly. I will get some better pictures of it when it is in the car

A local Pelican buddy of mine rothaus ran that same setup last year. I even considered it for my own car but lucked into a 993 HE setup instead. Honestly I think it's a pretty good system. Affordable and easy to install too!

A friend of mine is a wholesaler at the manheim auto auction. I told him I was in the market for one of these cars and no to long after this one was avaiable. I do have a car fax that was in the glove box when I got it showing one owner from California and trading it in here locally. I'm sure the milage of 186,000 is the reason it went to auction. The short time I drove the 3.0 it actually ran pretty well and only had a couple small oil leaks.

I am not sure of how often they become available at auction especially in the condition of this car. I actually rarely see them for sale except for spring and summer in this area.

I also scored a set of Kinesis K58's?? for the car from a guy on rennlist 17x7 & 17X8 for now I am going to run them in this configuration, but this fall I plan on getting a new set of barrels and making the rear 17x9's

Found a set of sport seats with green plaid insets!! the entire interior is in excellent condition and black so I think these may look pretty cool. I am undecided at this time because they are power and not sure about adding weight to this car.

Those seats are so cool that the weight penalty is worth it. :)

Wow!!! Nice project. I have a 3.2 in my 73 and it is a great combo. A 3.6 in that SC will push it around nicely. I'll watch this one.

regards,
al

It has been a long time since I have been to any events, but plan on attending a few this summer. Hopefully I will be able to drive this car to the Porsche breakfast club and drive to the Springs May 26th and at least one trip to Bishops Castle... fingers crossed

I just spoke to my tow truck guy and they are picking the car up to deliver it over to 3zero3 today at 2:00 :)! If you are planning on doing this swap to your car you are more than welcome to drop by sometime and see how it is all going together.

Very cool. If I can ever get my '72 to paint and back, I'll complete the 3.6 swap on it.

cdill 05-08-2012 05:16 PM

Old wiring harness out, new harness in, and the 915 meets the 3.6 today
