Im new to the 911 need advise!!!

Im currently inheriting a Older 911 porsche I have looked around to figure out the year. It does have a whale tail and the longer hood, I believe it is a 1973. The body style from 65-73. I do not have a vin for it yet till the end of this month. Right now i want to find good places to get parts and possibly performance parts. Half the engine is already taken apart and ready to be rebuilt. The pervious owner i will be getting this car from said all of the engine is there plus there is a 959 head. I know that could be just a code on the head or from another porsche later on. The guy passed away so i have no idea what he was doing with it. I would like to know anything possible to help with this rebuild. Plus i would like to out more power out of the engine with some minor not draining my back account. Thank you everyone for your time reading this! I hope to figure out more details on the car soon!
-Gordon.

For the engine - unless your a mechanic and can build it yourself, you should consider just buying a good used engine. Cheapest way to get a lot more power: 3.2 is a fairly straightforward upgrade with a lot of support on this forum.

Hi Gordon. Welcome to the forum. You will find tons of help here.

Post a picture of the car when you can. Also your location will help us identify knowledgeable folks in your area for when you need an extra hand or eyeball on something.

Just about everything you will need can be found here.

More power with minimal money is almost an oxymoron. The best bang for the buck would be a mild supercharger or turbo kit I'd imagine.

Other guys can tell you how much power you can get from headers, exhaust, carbs, etc. But those parts can cost more than an SC/turbo kit pieced/sourced together used.

Given the current market for early 911s and your interest in power, if the car you are getting can be brought to relatively original condition without breaking the bank, you might be better off doing that, selling it and buying a 3.2 Carrera.

The VIN of the car is critical - get that out to the group. Pics also help very much - you will get a lot of solid information here.

First thing you want to do is find and write down the engine number, trans number, and VIN. Use the Search function here to find out how and work out from there.

Best of luck!

1) Verify the VIN, essentially to see if you have a T, E, or S.
2) Figure out what you want, i.e., a driver, a racer, a show car, or a resale.

As others have noted, if it's an S, it is probably worth restoring to original. However, realize that this endeavor could easily run tens of thousands of dollars. If done right, it should be worth more than your investment, but be prepared to shell out some cash getting there. On the other hand, if it is a T, it will still cost tens of thousands of dollars and will most likely not be worth what you spent restoring it. That is probably a case where the engine swap makes the most sense. An E might be a toss up.

I will say this, a 3.2 in an early car makes for an awfully fun ride!

Roger

Try to get as many pictures and information posted as possible. If the car is indeed a '73, you will want to keep it as original as possible. As far as a location to buy parts, there is no better than our host. Easy to locate, great prices, fast service, excellent customer service, and hosting a killer forum.

I will get the vin soon then post it. Thank you for the help. That 3.2 idea does sound good. I just have to see what is in it already and try and figure out what he was trying to do.

Have some pictures now i just uploaded! These are the only photos i have of the car, the owner who has the paper work and getting the title doesn't know the year either so I wish I had gotten the vin but was not sure where to look. I do know the location now but cant see the car! The body is almost flawless just needs a good wash and some TLC probably a fresh paint job, no rust! Barn stored!

on an early car, people will pay for patina, so don't repaint if you can help it

a guy who is an artist with a buffer can do wonders on scratches...

Rear fenders look like short wheelbase to me, so 65-68.
