Did my 25 year checkup today - Perfect Bill of Health

The car:
  • 1988 911 Carrera Coupe
  • Venetian Blue
  • Marine Blue & Linen Interior
  • No Sunroof
  • 15" Fuchs
  • About 35K miles
  • Unmolested & kept in Concours condition
  • I'm second owner; purchased May 1997 with 6800 miles

I've been doing regular service myself for the past few years and have decided to put turbo tie rods on. This inspired me to take the car into a local independent shop (Chris' German Auto) to have a pro spend an hour giving her a 25 year checkup to ensure I didn't need to replace any other suspension bits while I was in there.

She was idling a tad low (~810, now 850) and the CO2 was a bit low; Chris adjusted that. In doing so he noted the hydrocarbon output reading was about 40-50PPM.

He declared "You would have to see 100 cars come through here before you saw another that tight."

He noticed one post on my Optima battery was tweaked and the battery should be replaced. New one on the way via Amazon Prime (great way to buy car batteries; free shipping!).

Other than that. She's good to go for another 25 years.

I'm ordering the turbo tie rods soon...

Damn, that is a nice looking 911. I am envious.

Now you need to put some more miles on it!

Hi 911 (0x038F)

I just looked at your FJ-40 (Toyota Jeep for those not in the know, Toyota's are NOT Jeeps for those in the know :-)) and I realized you and I have similar cars and 'jeeps' but exactly the opposite in terms of use -- I drive the living hell out of mine, and you restore yours to better than new condition! I have no problem with that don't get me wrong, just not for me.

My '80 CJ-5 doesn't have a straight panel left on it, has a fully 'tested' roll cage, and it gets very nervous on the last day of trail rides! Almost nothing left stock on it, stroked motor is a combination of old and new I-6 blocks, GM EFI with Ford TFI ignition. More fun than should be allowed, yet still very streetable even on 120lb (each!) beadlocked Mickey Thompsons.

Drive your cars as little or as much as you want, it's all in what you enjoy.

Very nice. I'd love to see it and spend an hour myself looking it over. It's beautiful.

Identical car as mine with 1/5 of the miles. Thanks for sharing the picture of what mine used to look like.

Sounds like you really enjoy your CJ. For me and the FJ40 it was more about the experience of restoring her myself. I considered selling her a while back and then got cold feet:

Looked at your pics. Your car is beautiful. Yes, I'm biased.

What color is your interior?

Tires are:

205/55R15 BFGoodrich g-Force Sport
225/50R15 BFGoodrich g-Force Sport

Bought them at TireRack

This is the size I put on when I first bought the car in 1997 based on a recommendation from an expert. I've been super happy with this size since.

They are slightly undersized. This gives slightly higher gearing (which was awesome when I was autocrossing) but threw the speedo off. A few years ago I sent my speedo to North Hollywood Speedometer and had it adjusted. It now reads accurately.

Interior is the same color, linen. But the dirt and wear on the linen is a different color on mine. I also don't have the blue floor mats that I see in your picture. I've got a double set of floor mats and have wondered why. Wasn't sure if that's standard or if the previous owner bought a new set and put them on top of the old?

Mine's got a sunroof and some non-original equipment unlike yours- steering wheel, intake, sway bar.

Thats the most amazing sample of VB I've ever seen. Your car is my favorite ever. You know that. BTW, I am now living in your neck of the woods. See PM. I would love to get together if time permits for you to do a photoshoot. I took my pristine (but not showroom like yours) beauty to Chris's garage and he was admiring its mechanical condition too. My car has 90,000 well cared for miles on it.
