Butters Hits the Road - Another 3.2 Install!

We needed a solid 3.0 for a project, so my beloved husband (who spoils me terribly) bought me a 1985 3.2 with a very nice 915 for my 81 coupe. I've piddled around for quite a while putting this engine in the car. First, I decided to repaint the engine bay and forgo the sound deadener pad. Just in case I change my mind in the future, I left the bendy clips in place

I replaced all the fuel lines on the engine. I had those built locally. They are sound and of good quality, but they somewhat fail the aesthetics I was looking for. When it came to the fuel lines to integrate to the older 3.0 Chassis, I contacted Len Cummings for some proper fuel lines. I wanted to cut back part of the factory 3.0 chassis hardline and adapt directly to the 3.2 engine and fuel filter (obviously I've removed the accumulator). You can see the return line from the chassis and the pressure line into the filter in this picture. Yes, the pressure line is cut-back - I was going for a particular look. Len's work is GREAT. These lines are exactly the quality and workmanship I had in mind for my project! THANKS!

Now the engine is in, wired and fired. My handsome husband helped with the install, I'm too wimpy to wrestle it all in with the floor jack by myself - removal? No problem. Install? Fughedabout it. This is EASY for Steve - he just gets it close and then grabs whatever part needs moved, then lifts/shoves the whole thing into place.

Little more fiddling with a few things, some final wiring, etc. The car runs and drives VERY nicely! Probably the nicest shifting 915 I've ever driven. An absolutely pleasure!

So - thank you husband for your support and Manly Strength. Thank you Pelicans for the install write-ups. Easy enough that even I can do it!

Not yet. Just cleaned/serviced/gaskets, etc., plus sent the injectors to Witchunter for a good cleaning.

I'm saving money for SW Chip and exhaust. My husband's car has a nice Dansk performance muffler on the 3.2. Sounds just fantastic.

I want something like that!!!

Good to see the swap went well, Angela. I hope to meet Butters in person one of these days.

+1 on Witchunter; they did a great job on my A4 3.0 injectors and I suspect I will send them my Carrera's 26 year old injectors and seals.

Congrats. I'll be interested to see if you like the sound w/o sound pad...

Did you remove the deadening on the interior side of the firewall?

I like it w/o the sandpad. The factory coating on the inside of the cab side of the firewall is sill there. I'm likely going to pull the rear seats/carpet, etc., and dyna-mat it before I put the louder exhaust in. I drive this car ALOT on long road trips. What sounds awesome for an hour or so is grating for a 12 hour drive.

But right now, stock exhaust - this is fine. The coating in the engine bay is actually bedliner material so it has some impact on the sound volume. It's surprising how much of the resonance type noise that it will completely eliminate.

Man, I got to tell you guys, I REALLY missed my car!

My 3.2 has all the stock sound pads, stock banana muffler, but an M&K pre muffler (no cat). The sound is OK, maybe just a touch too quiet. I'm kicking around the thought of either an M&K 1 in/1 out, or maybe a Dansk Sport. A bit hard to justify, since the OE appears to already be stainless, it's a fair amount of cash to put out for a little more sound.

Your OE is stainless, but the Danske isn't just louder, it also has more performance. I've driven a 3.2 with and without the Danske. Much prefer the "with." Not alot more power, but there is a little more. My butt-dyno is pretty accurate.

The danske has a nice authoritive exhaust note without being obnoxious. They sound terrific! There are probably others as well that do the same thing, this is just the one I'm familiar with.

Plus, if I do that AND get the SW chip, then my car will be faster than my husband's.

That's the important part!

Ok, random question here... what brand of distributor cap is that? All the Bosch and Beru 3.2 caps I have used have a black plastic cover.

Glad to hear you like Dansk. I've hear some complain about drone at certain RPM's with certain aftermarket exhaust systems. Any such problems with the Dansk?

It actually had a black cover but that was damaged in the fire. At some point, the previous owner of this engine caught it on fire. There were assorted crispy bits of wiring such as to the idle control valve, plastics, hoses, and fuel line along with a nice coating of extinguishing material in the hidden areas. If you look close at the idle control valve, you can see the significant discoloring - that's from the fire. The cap itself was brand new, so I removed the little black plastic cover. That's what's "under" that cover. I'll replace the cap at some point, but the removal of the melty bit was for aesthetics. Fixed the wiring (it ran, but would fail at some point) repaired/replaced all the hoses, etc.

Not sure about a drone from the Danske. It doesn't drone at all on the cabriolet but there is wind noise that could mask it. Plus, the entire tub of the cabby is lined with the bedliner material whereas my car is not. The best experiment will be for me to put it in this coupe an go for a long drive!

The bracket for the air cleaner was home-made from the previous owner. Don't like it. Don't like it one bit. Needs at least two mounting points instead of one. We have got a eight sheets of heavy stainless and my husband is just dying to use his new welder on that material. Have I got a project for him - LOL!
