help - front bearing race part welded? to spindle - what now?

On the track the handling was funny and then heard a noise.
The right front outside wheel bearing failed.
We have spent a good part of the afternoon, cutting into beer drinking time now, trying to get the outside race piece off.

Here is a picture, we have tried all sorts of things, pipe wrench, heat, pullers, cutting with dremel/etc. that thing is not moving.

Is it welded to the spindle? Do we give up and assume we will need a new Boge spindle or do we go to Harbor Freight and get more air tools? Any ideas appriciated.

Man, that's f-ed up.

Can you fashion a slid hammer using the puller?

Wouldn't an air hammer make short work of that?

Have you tried an air hammer/chisel?

Even if you get it off the spindle may be junk, any scratches and nicks could crack later on, also the spindle diameter is probably way off from the original spec due to all the wear.

I've got a pair late Boge struts (86-89) if you're interested. PM me if you want to discuss.

my guess is that if you manage to get it off, what you will be left with is a spindle in need of replacing....save yourself some time and just get a anew one.....

the bearing surface is most likely goobered up

how hot is hot? MAP gas should get it red hot....some form of puller would be my tool of choice

done a few roadside repairs with worse looking races than that

we only had big hammers and cold chisels, we cut a groove like you have with a chisel and then use the chisel sideways to your groove and hit it hard in the direction of rotation, really stubborn ones required one guy to hold the chisel (with a big pliers or rag) and one guy to hammer it, it will split and come off

worst one I was involved in was an overloaded 1 ton truck with duallies in the middle of nowhere, only way we knew the bearing failed was the inner tire got so hot from the bearing welding itself that it blew out with a huge bang.

that truck ran 10 more overload years on the same chiseled up axle

Thanks, seems like something we should look at, I've pointed out your post to the owner, we'll see what he wants to do. Can lead a horse to water....

Update - owner got an air chisel attempting to get the race peeled off. Nothing doing. Apparently for the most part it welded itself to the spindle. Now looking to find replacement spindle. Spindle says BOGE on it.

What year car? What side is bad? You will need a replacement strut housing.

I think it is an 88 and right (passenger) side.
A person above has what looks like the correct struts.
I don't know how to tell which is the exact model needed.
I can post other markings found on the strut assuming the owner has not already got the replacement part lined up.

Thanks for the note.
