Engine removal question

Hello all.

I have to take my engine out of my 77 911 for some engine work. The transmission is fine.

Is it easier to remove just the engine or remove both the engine and trans together? I was hoping just to leave the trans in,

I don't have a lift to get the car above my head just jack stands and jack ramps and several big floor jacks.

Thanx L

You'll get a variety of opinions on this. . . mine is that it's far easier to remove them together as a unit. Really, the only additional work is to unbolt the CV joints at the transmission, which I think is a good trade-off when compared to trying to mate them back together w/the transmission in the car.

+1 for mated removal and install. Inspect your tranny while it's out.

I agree. My favorite way is to remove the engine and trans as a unit. You have to dissconnect the gear shift rod either way, and keeping the engine & trans together means you just dissconnect the CV joints and all the other things like electrical & fuel etc. Also, when you're using jacks and jack stands, I think the whole thing comes out easier. Separating the engine & trans can be a PITA.

Remove them as one.
Once you have the trans out its a good time to replace the trans oil. btw, drain the trans oil before you remove the trans from the car.

You can drop just the engine .. but when you go to put it back you will likely end up removing the transmission after fighting with it for while to end up mating them to install ... they go in easier together ....

+1 remove as a whole.

Just remove the bumper and muffler you will gain about 6-7 more inch of clearance

Not me

No need to take off the reflectors and lights.

Worlds easier to remove them as one. If you just drop the engine, it comes out at a weird angle and it's a gigantic pain to line it up and reinstall.

You can clean up the trans while you have both out.......

+1 on together.
it took me 30 minutes connecting the tranny and engine even with those out the car. it was just a matter of wiggling the crank but should be easier with them out of the car. also, finessing the clutch lever and TOB should be easier with them out.

I am pulling out both the engine and the trans as a unit. I have a lift and a cart.
My question is it better to drop them on the cart or use a floor jack?

I am leaning to the cart, lower the car to touch the cart then undo engine and trans bolts.

But I am concerned about seperating the trans from the engine on a cart. How heavy is it?

i agree. Use a cart, or two.
Tranny is very heavy. 100lb or so? not sure. not impossible to hug and carry - which i did - but heavy. use two carts.

Use a cart. The transmission isn't terribly heavy as far as large car parts go. It's pretty easily maneuvered in and out of place.
