Dreaded shifter sc
i know this has been covered but i still have questions. i need some help with the dreaded shifter on my 83 sc ( i copied the images from some other posts , i hope that the original posters don't mind).
my shifter rotated ever so slightly to the left so i was not able to engage 5th gear. i am not sure how this happened as the shifter rod is still tight, not broken as in the photo below. ![]() when i pulled the boot back i noticed that the clip on the shifter rod that allows the 5th gear to engage had rotated enough to lock it out of gear. i was able to rotate the shifter enough to the right (with pliers, very stiff) so it now will engage and shift. the shifter is still tight and not broken or sheared off etc. the photo below illustrates approximate placement of shifter to blockout tab...it goes in gear smoothly etc. i can rotate more or less (red lines) ![]() MY QUESTIONS ARE HOW DO YOU DETERMINE THE CORRECT ORIENTATION OF THE SHIFTER TO THE REST OF THE LINKAGE...can it be over rotated? if it is engaging and going into gear, is that all that is necessary? IF ORIENTATION IS OFF WILL IT CAUSE THE SHIFTING FORKS , GEARS OR SYNCRHOS TO WEAR, HOW DO I CHECK IT ? if i want to mig-weld the shift rod do i need to pull it from the car? Thanks for baring with me. Ben |

Before going any further I would suggest checking the shift rod coupler (under panel, on top of tunnel, behind front seats); the plastic bushings in this coupler can disintegrate with age and cause problems. New bushings can be obtained from our host and installed. Coupler can be readily removed from tunnel to effect the new bushings installation on a bench top. The engine and transmission must be removed to pull the horizontal shift rod rearward out of the tunnel. There are plastic fuel lines in the tunnel so take care with any welding. Good luck.

Hi Ben,
This happened on my '82. I could rotate the shifter but couldn't pull it out. The rotation caused it to be misaligned with the gates. When it was taken apart, you could see where the attachment had originally been and why it was rotating. A small bit of welding and it was back on the road. Sorry, I didn't take any pics.

Also, I responded to your PM. Here is my response just in case you did not get it: I don't recommend forcefully rotating your shifter w/vice grips as you described. Below is a link to a step-by- step Pelican tutorial I posted a while ago. I suggest you check these other possibilities and see if this fixes your problem. Make sure you post your results. Good luck!
