Post Faster 930 or 68 firebird ??

Hello I own a 81 930 with k-27, adj boost, powerhaus exhaust, and my YAPPY brother in law has a freshened but lightly modified 68 firebird (350 cu in) with exhaust and carbs. This clown keeps chirping that he would woop my butt in a race. Anybody have any opinions ???

You should kill him in a race. Be carful though he is less likely to break parts. If you get a rolling start he is dead meat. Alex

It really depends what he's got in that SBC vs what you've got in your 930...when these 'comparison' threads come up the posters are almost never talking about bone-stock vs. bone-stock. So I 'spose we'd need more details.

A built alum. head 350 with 400+ ft-lbs of torque would absolutely trounce a stock 930, up to say 120mph that is, after which that Chebby would be ready to take off!

Depends on the race. I took a kid in a 96 or so Trans Am through the twisties a couple nights ago. He couldn't hang.

You're right, it is the driver. But I would rather be in a 911 in the middle of a 110 mph sweeper than a trans am.

I have the same 81 930 as you. My car is factory stock. Off the line he will kill you because of the extreme turbo lag. The only way you can increase your off the line performance is headers and large diameter ss exhaust. From what I have been told it helps eliminate that annoying lag and dollar for dollar its the best HP incerease you can buy.
I guess it all depends on how long the race is and what the road is like. The 930 was not built to be a drag racer, its a high performance machine designed for long haul high speed and handleing. Any KNOB with $5000.00 can build a pile a junk car that off the line would beat most factory machines off the line in a 1/4 mile race. So it is pretty unfair to compare the 2 cars in such a race. In similar situations I just laugh off the challenges and tell them when they get a Porsche then Ill race!!

Uh...that's not quite true. That is not the "only" way you can increase off the line performance. In fact, it's not even close to true. You can stroke and bore the motor, change the compression, change the fuel and spark delivery systems, etc., etc.

You can triple the available torque at 3000 rpm, and if you have the right clutch, you can squeal off the line just fine with the V8 boys, with 11 second quarters at 130 mph trap speeds, and a very impressive top speed.

Just open your checkbook, and all things are possible...

But you need more dollars than sense.

Sorry, you are correct I should rephrase that. I should have clarified my point. I was trying to to give an example of a reasonably priced way to loose the turbo lag without performing a major overhaul on the mechanical aspects of the engine.
Yes it would be nice to have the unlimited financial resources to build a monster!

Hello

Somone ever tried to compare J.S.Bach´s Toccata and fuge in D minor to
Igor Stravinsky Firebird.

Let him win and your sister will love you as you saved him deep frustration leading into seriuos money investet into the car.

A good maintained 930 with some sticky runs under 13.5. If you press hard and shift quick
and if your modifications pay back under 13 will be in reach. But is a clutch and some other blown parts worth that ?

I have 81' 930 too!

It's not worth it. 1:st gear is too tall and turbo-lag is too long. You'll just fry your clutch...he probably has a slushbox, so he'll do better...

Ask him if he want's to compete on a track, otherwise...pass.

It is obvious that these two cars are opposites in there intended use.

A near stock '68 Firebird will only go well in a straight line.

A near stock 930 only goes well in a straight line while on boost and at high speed.

Good luck trying to convince him to run his 33 year old car at the top end!
