Introducing my 1970 911T, questions about heat exchangers and seatbelts

Hi Everyone,

Long time reader, first time poster.

I just bought this 1970 911T, which is in very good shape considering it has spent the last 30 years in Canada:

I would like to make sure the car is reasonably safe, so two questions please.

The heat exchangers are pretty much entirely rusted away. If I don't turn the heat on and keep the center lever between the seats in the closed position, is carbon monoxide a concern? Even with the windows down, there is a noticeable smell of exhaust/fumes inside the car... The exhaust appears fine.

I plan to install retractable seat belts. Is this the plug where I can bolt the reel?

Thanks,
Greg

HEs use air being pushed by the engine fan and an extra fan past hot exhaust pipes. There is no interaction between the fresh air and the exhaust gases unless there is a leak in the exhaust pipe.

Usually the HE shells rust but the exhaust pipes stay intact. Exhaust leaks will give themselves away by backfire on decel.

www.peparts.com make a nice repro set of seat belts.

BTW, welcome to the board.

Another note....the removal of HEs is complicated. Do a search or have a pro pull them. It is very easy to snap the exhaust studs when trying to remove the nuts. Snapped studs are very costly to repair especially when the snap off flush to the port.

Clicking on the link sends me to a page that says they are no longer in the seat belt biz.

talk to a guy named Steve at Seatbeltplanet.com I just finished putting in a set of contemporary retractable seat belts in my 70T . The key to the belt swap was the panel that the belt had to go through. If you don't have the correct panel the belt won't work with the hole that is already pre drilled. I had to have mine installed straight down from the top bolt to make it work with my panel. SSnake Oyl products also works on belts. Ssnake Oyl Products Steve made me a 126" total length belt for reference.

Thanks for the replies so far!

The car does pop sometimes. I'll pay more attention to that, and do a more thorough check for exhaust leaks.

I'm not against HEs, I'm just not sure what they will get me since I don't want heat. In the meantime I discovered Air Block-Off Plates on this site, which look interesting.

For the belts, I'm looking at Corbeau:
Corbeau: 3-Point Retractable Seat Belt

or maybe Wesco:
Retractable Seat Belts
