Rear oil tank loose wire

Found a disconnected wire on the rear oil tank under the pass side wheel well...did not notice any problems due to the disconnected wire. Maybe Im missing something?
Should a gauge or warning light be affected by this being disconnected?
Thanks

Believe that's connect (sender?) to the oil level gauge in the car...
Most don't work properly...mine is pegged, I'm to lazy to replace the sender..

That gauge works well and didn’t seem to have been affected. That’s why I’m a little confused to what the wire was connected to.

Those are the only line ran to the tank...
I would clean that area up and see where its suppose to be connected...
Still pretty sure it goes to the oil level gauge..( not oil pressure)

That's the ground wire to complete the circuit to the oil level gauge. The other wire to the left (black if I recall) is the signal wire. Gauge may still work if the level sensor and gauge are both grounded to the body. The level sensor is attached to the tank, which is hard-mounted to the body (no rubber cushions), so there is a likely path to ground, but the wire makes it certain.

If that is oil (hard to tell), you need a new gasket on the level sensor. Pretty straightforward to R&R.

If you lift the oil level sensor signal wire, your dash gauge will peg. If there is a break in the winding on the sensor (basically a rheostat), when the slider gets it will peg (so might work in the morning when a lot of oil has drained into the engine sump, but not after you get going and the level in the tank drops, with some flickering in between unless I have this backward).

My diagrams show a white ground wire, but Dave is right. Easy to check if this one is a ground, and hook it up. But no particular need to do so, since your gauge is working correctly.

Most DO work properly. Oil pressure is kind of important for an oil-cooled engine. If yours is not working, it would be a good idea to fix it.

NOR WAS I!!

Oil level is important because if you don’t have enough oil you are going to have problem with oil pressure as the oil level gets way too low.

Visit a DIY car wash and remove that road grit and oil from the underside. Could be hiding corrosion. In addition, it looks awful. Inspect and repair. MHO.

Something is leaking somewhere. Take the tank down & have it cleaned & pressure checked (or do it yourself). As I recall, the tank hanger bolts (2) have a series of spacers/insulators to mount properly & they're always boogered up and/or installed wrong. Replace the dust shield, tank to inner fender well, replace the sending unit gasket, then route the wiring properly.

Shouldn't cost much for spacer/insulators and a gasket.
