Replacing H5s with Euro H4s in '87 Carrera - Why aren't the H4s secure?

Guys,

I recently installed Euro H4s in my '87 Carrera which had the stock H5s. From what I can tell, there's only one screw at the bottom of the headlight assembly that secures the assembly to the bucket. Once installed, the top of the H4 assembly isn't secured to the headlight bucket. I can see that it slightly protrudes, and I can easily pull the assembly away from the top of the bucket.

What am I missing?

Thanks!

There is a small lip on the top edge of the bucket which the headlamp assembly hooks onto before attaching the lower edge with the screw. If you have installed a new seal, you might have to press the light down firmly to get it to hook on.

When installing the headlight (H4, H5, H1 - doesn't matter) you need to "hook" the top of the headlight onto the retaining lip before putting in the lower screw. There are a ton of posts on the topic w/ more specifics, but I found that if I pushed down and slightly back on the top of the headlight, right where the little retaining lip is, everything lines up and stays put once the bottom screw is in. You need to keep pressure on the headlight the whole time. It takes a little more force with brand new headlight seals.

When I replaced/converted fr h5 to h4, I had my 100lb wifey apply pressure at that 'hook' point whilst I fastened the lower securement screw...

She also thought it was a $hittee design.

The best way is to barely start the lower screw, then pop the top portion over the lip.

This is one downside to the Euro H4 upgrade. The secure-ness of the light into the fender kinda sucks. I've seen several instances of guys have their light pop out when on the track. Lots of guys make sure to run the tape over the edge of the light lens and onto the fender when they tape over the lights for track days.

For the street there's not much you can do. Best bet is to make sure the lower threaded area is nice & sturdy. The tab is just a thin piece of metal with a punched-thru section that is threaded, and the threads can get loosened up over time. Welding a nut onto the tab helps strengthen the connection
