It took only 49 years!

What is this???
When I was putting in my Kuehl center vent, I ran into an obstacle of the unknown kind
 It is behind the ashtray area, and has a hose that is attached to this hole in the dash just behind the cruise stalk  Does anyone know what it is and what purpose it serves? It looks like some kind of miniature fan. Thanks

thanks guys, my curiosity has been sated..that little piece made the center vent install a PITA, but it's done

Well worth any hassle to install the vent though, the output is amazing.
