No you will not work the 915 too hard. Tyhe 84-86 Carreras used a 915 with a 3.2L engine.

I am just about to sell my 3.2L if you are looking for one.

The vehicle is a 1977 911S Targa.

Will I work the 915 to hard with a 3.2

No, if you drive it normally it should last a long time especially as your's was recently rebuilt.
If you are doing 6000 rpm clutch drops from a stop as mentioned in the Wheeler Dealer show, it will break eventually like any other transmission. :)

915

Thank you all for the great replies.

Based on what everyone has said, I use the 915 with the 3.2.

Based on the feedback, it sounds like the 915 should work well with a 3.2.

quattrorunner 07-30-2012 05:59 PM

My 915 is running with a 930:eek:
I have a 91561 as well, it's a good one and if you run a 3.2-3.6 youl be fine

maui44 07-30-2012 06:14 PM

If you can run a 915 with a 930 I am sure I be fine with a 3.2

For 930's, are most of the early Transmissions 4-speed?

quattrorunner 07-30-2012 06:21 PM

930's used 930 boxes(4 speed) till 88 I think when they used the g50 box. 930 boxes are great if you have enough torqe to turn those tall gears. Not good unless you have a turbo.

Could someone tell me the main differance between my 915/61 and a 915 /68 and 915/73?

Thanks

Agree with prior posts, I would not bother with the headache and expense of installing the G50. At that point, I'd sell what I have and buy a G50 Carrera already done.

A 915 with good syncros and adjusted linkages works just fine with a 3.2L. I upgraded from a 3.0L to a 3.2L and stayed away from the 3.6L due to cost. BTW, it's a simple upgrade, bolt-in, some minor mods to fuel lines and 14 pin connector.

Buying a used motor is a risky, and potentially expensive endeavour. I'd do the take your time route suggested by Grady, and plan a rebuild.

maui44 07-30-2012 07:31 PM

Ed,

I am in no rush at all. I am looking at doing this down the road sometime. The trigger will probably when my rebuilt 2.7 has issues that some issues.

Keep Driving It

IMHO Why change the motor? The mid 70's 911s are finally seeing an increase in value for clean rust free cars with matching numbers. I went down the motor change road and I spent a lot of $$$ and I lost a lot of $$$ in resale value for my 73. To make your 2.7 live a long & happy life, you may just need to look at a SSI and maybe an oil cooler to help with the heat dissipation issue. Since 1977 is still under CA SMOG regulations, that is another thing to consider for a few years. You have the solid 77 motor & trans in your car which is pretty darn good. Enjoy:). When the time comes, bigger, better motors will still be available.

maui44:

I say a little "Forced Induction" is in order here. Not much boost 5-7psi is safe. A supercharger or turbo would do it well.... It is do-able.
