From Race-Ready to Suitable-For-Street

After seven tracks in seven days, Black Beauty isn't too much the worse for wear. I got the stickers off today, and put the ducktail spoiler back on and removed the front splitter. There are a few more chips in the front hood and valence, but the car almost looks civilized again.

(Click on a thumbnail for a larger version.)

Two Days Ago:

Today:

I'll put the 16-inch wheels back on until my 'street' set of 17's (9x8x17, as opposed to the 10x8x17's in these pictures).

And until I get the muffler tucked back up there, the car still packs a very aggressive look from behind.

Amazing metamorphosis, Jack. Love the license plate, but what's the "Marxist Classic Car Club" on the license plate frame?

When I was in the Navy and stationed in Great Lakes IL, we would head over to Libertyville when we were on, well..... liberty. I was one of the few with a car so I usually had a full load. One of my buddies had me drive him all over that town as well as others nearby shopping for a new truck. He bought a Toyota from the dealer in Libertyville. We kept the roads from Chicago to Milwaukee well covered for a solid year. Ever hear of the motel called El Ranchero? I think it was in "Planes, Trains and Automobiles".

Quite a change. How did you get the stickies off? Did they leave any marks?

Personally, I like the muffler look.

I am amazed at the ability of these cars to go from street to track and from track to street so easily. Especially when you consider that a 25 year old car can be so competative on the track, and mainatain such a modern-classic look on the street.

As for the license plate, now I know why you always blank it out.

Jack has a conscience, a heart and a brain. Don't look now but liberals have infiltrated every part of our society. If you're not careful, peace, liberty and freedom could break out at any time. Be vigilant.

Mild mannered citizen by day.....
Seriously though, congragulations on the close second place finish. For the first time out the two of you made quite a splash and I'm sure the hard core bimmer guys are drinking an extra pot of coffee and are working round the clock in nervous anticipation of next year.
I sometimes gotta say to myself :"Yeah, he may be a good driver. Yeah, he may be a ladies man. Yeah, he may be an exceptional writer........but he's no Jack Olsen."

Jack,

Those 17's look great. Why are you going with a narrower width for the street set? That muffler sure sits low.

I would have removed the decals and....well....just the decals. And the air conditioning and maybe the radio. The wheels and exhaust would stay.

Muffler

It was originally a C2 muffler. The early cars don't have enough of a bumper to cover it.

I didn't realize it would sit that low on an early car. How *would* you get it up higher?

Jack - did you get the secondar plenum working?

A better question might be- "What's holding the muffler onto the car? " I don't see any straps, It sure looks like a B&B to me though. The low hanging B&B was another reason I went with the custom welded pipes.

Jack,

They're A032Rs, aren't they? How many sets of those tires did you go through during OTC?

Do those big 17x10 wheels rub at all? I love the look, it really means business...

The Libertyville Marxist Classic Car Club thing was a tongue-in-cheek stab at the rock-ribbed-Republican town a group of friends and I grew up in. One night late at a diner, we decided we'd accumulated enough classic cars to form a club, and I suggested that we use it to raise money for worthwhile causes. Somebody called me a no-good communist (again, it was late, we were punchy) and the LMCCC was born.

Whatever your opinion on American-Islamic relations, we use the club to raise money to feed homeless kids pizza on the days a local shelter serves liver. It's a small step for a car club, sure, but it's better than only throwing money into go-fast upgrades.

The URSOHOT plates came from another late-night meal, I think. It came in handy that the race-prepped BMW was able to see them sitting right in front of him for several laps at his home track of Buttonwillow, last week. Again, they're there with tongue firmly in cheek.

And to keep it on topic, here's another shot from the Streets of Willow:
