911 Won't Start

Basically its a 1977 911s Targa. My understanding is it was sitting for a number of years before it ran again. I acquired it back in October and it was towed to my garage. At the time it needed all calipers and rotors replaced and the clutch was stuck. Put fresh gas in it and it actually started and ran.

From what I can see its been well maintained, thermal reactors removed, 11 blade fan added.

About three weeks ago I pushed it out in the driveway and we rocked it back and forth a bit with the clutch pedal depressed and it broke loose. I started the car, drove it up the street a few times and then put it back in the garage.

Next day I pulled the distributor out a few inches to get the number off it for the Pertronix Ignitor. I placed it back in the same position. Since then I ordered from Pelican new plugs, fuel filter, air filter, valve cover gaskets and nuts, fanbelt, oil filter.

Tried to start the car to warm up the oil and no go, will turn over until battery goes dead.

I figured its off its timing so I brought it to TDC on #1 as seen by the white mark in the crankshaft. I checked the cylinder with a screwdriver and its at the top. Also the distributor rotor is pointing at the mark on the housing.

Can someone check the photos to see what I got screwed up?

Any help is appreciated as its now driving me nuts......

Points gap OK?
Are you getting spark to the plugs?

Do you smell unburnt fuel at tail ppe when cranking? If not it may be the fuel pump.

Fresh Plugs, Dist good and points are opening and closing (never checked gap).

Lots of spark on the plugs.

One thing I did notice is that the plugs are dry when I pull them after I crank to the point where the battery dies?

How do I check the fuel pump? I noticed the sending unit was sticky so I tapped the top with a wrench and its free up? Fuel Filter was changed too.

Should the fuel pump run when the key is turned on?

If the car was run dry of fuel does the system need to be bled and can it be air locked?

A similar thing happened to me after the car sat for a couple of years. The car ran for a couple of miles and then quit. The fuel pump got gunked up from the semi-liquid fuel in the tank. I had to clean the pump/tank screen and tank.

Good luck

Lots of fuel pumping to CIS.

But discovered I may need a rebuild for the motor. #4 Cylinder is leaking on what appears to be the head gasket.

Might be looking for a new motor or rebuild the 2.7
