"Add engine oil Castrol GTX"

Why would you do all this work and then use Castol?
Get some Brad Penn, your engine will thank you for the protection.

Blackbyrd 08-21-2012 10:16 AM

I don't want to make it into an "oil thread" if you hit the search button there are many threads on this subject

I went with castrol because
1. ive always used it and have no problem with it.
2. it was highly recommended by my mechanic whom I have mad respect for, track racers, as well others that have used the oil day in day out.
3. cheaper

I feel personally Brad penn is just a label oil found on magazine pages (kind like Royal purple in Japanese import mags)
everyone has there own choice or opinion on it. It can be endless conversion
that I choose to no longer discuss.

Today was just a hoot!

I worked on the car from 4-11:30pm

New parts were delivered today:

Proper Axle gaskets (smaller than the 901 part number)
Bushing for shift rod
Bushings for Shift arm on transmission
Bosch Distributor cap
Bosch Distributor cap
Cup for shifter

The first thing I did was add all hardware for the air box,
Seems I was missing a nylon nut inside of the box Doh!
Then installed the air box cover that was previously modified to Cup Spec

http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h3...C/8a744f79.jpg
The upgrade part about this box was that It makes it easier to bolt on and access that annoying lower clip

Next was the shift Rod bushing ( I have A.D.D. so I jump around from projects)
I was glad I replaced this, The previous bushing was ROCK hard
This project is so easy to do and compliments other jobs.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h3...C/bb7f1d8d.jpg

Added white grease to the Rod as well as the rod bushing.
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h3...C/d192ab15.jpg
Here it is installed with the front coupler (also greased)

I was just about to jump to another project (A.D.D. kicking in again)
but decided to finish the project in one swift stroke

Then came the Cup for the shifter ball
You can clearly see the difference between the two
It didn't look bad until I compared it to the new one, The old one had also turned rock over time...White grease was my friend once again
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h3...C/cf87fe99.jpg

About to go together
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h3...C/9597c518.jpg

Tried cleaning around a little more
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h3...C/54264c49.jpg

Followed by a thorough check of any Bolt/nut my eye could see
I had to make sure everything was nice, tight and to Torque spec.

Another nice shot of the Rebel Racing Transmission mount
http://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h3...C/49de9bbd.jpg

After that I Repacked the Axles, added new Gaskets, New hose clamps for the Axles boots as well as new hardware for the Axles to Trans flanges. All nice and bolted to Torque specs.

I forgot to mention
the Carrera Muffler that was replaced for the SC muffler did NOT want to go on with the valance in the way... I had to remove the valance...while It was out I got a specialty hammer and just hammered away at the dents

Then realized my current SC muffler straps didn't fit!!!

I got out 964 muffler straps (all I had) and those also were too small
SO I had to make some Straps out of Wurth Hose clamps!!!

Yes very Ghetto!! (photos coming soon) I made 3 "straps" out of 3 various sizes.

It holds for now but will be changed as soon as some arrive.

Valance fit after the muffler was mounted.

After the engine Oil was poured in, Battery connected
and other little various jobs it was Time to start the car! At this point I was ecstatic

Except Terror Struck!

While the fuel was priming through the system we noticed
The engine was running on 3-4 cylinders

I forgot to mention I had trouble installing the Beru plugs I had purchased 1000 miles ago along with the Cap/rotor that were junk!
Seems the par that connects to the top of the plug came off the part inside the wire...
I will post photos tomorrow....

Long story short I had to remove the plug wires
Dig around through my stash .... all I found were like new 964 spark plug wires

I matched up the 964 spark plug wires to the cables on the 911 3.2 and It all worked out, They fit! including the little cups that cover the valve covers.

I don't plan to keep them, only temporary

More photos of this to be posted

the Car FIRED UP IN A ROAR!

I could heard the Air box breathing
The Carrera Muffler definitely had a different pitch

Some adjustments later (clutch/throttle cable)

and the car was ready to roll out of the Garage for the first time since the build

First thing I noticed was how fast it would rev out.
Then the first test drive

YIKES!!!! this car was fast!! and extremely smooth
It revved up very nice Felt much much more power... Its seriously night and day

The REBEL RACING ENGINE/TRANS MOUNTS
Gave the car a perfect ride, The transmission we rebuilt was smooth like butter.

It shifted so nicely through out all the gears
At first I was traumatized to shift into 1st or 5th but the feeling went quickly away

The TOP end was out of control

The fact that I did all these changes to the car really added up.
Im pretty tired right now...and will post more photos and projects tomorrow...

Oh yeah the Duck tail is not ready to install so I had to use the Turbo tail
It was such a pain installing it, Took forever to add spacers (next time take photos and make marking prior to removal)

Still left to do:

Instal Front struts
Replaced Front strut shock top mounts (camber plates ?)
Replaced Sway bar bushing (x4)
add stiffer sway bars
Replace tires
Replace rear brake pads
Replace e-brake pads
Replace all rotors
eventually Add Oil cooler (a different thread project)
Replace seat rails
Replace all Fuel lines on oil pump/tank

Take the car over to Corner balance Guru Steve Alarcon
For suspension tuning

great job , hows she shifting?

Blackbyrd 08-24-2012 02:27 PM

Trouble in paradise begins

Turns out the through out bearing is making tons of noise more so than the previous bearing

Pretty annoying only on idle and or on low high gear at low RPM

makes me want to toss my transmission off a cliff

is this normal .... I had a few people say yes "live with it"

Blackbyrd 08-24-2012 09:04 PM

Trouble in paradise round 2

I'm typing this while sitting in a parking looking at my car nice and covered....

Seems the transmission has a mind of its own

It will not consistently shift into any gear
the pattern keeps changing

Messed with the coupler forever (stompski) and that doesn't do anything
My coworkers and I are Stumped

Replaced everything I could imagine

I have a feeling it might be my shifter
The previous owner installed a factory short shift kit

Originally it didn't shift bad but right before the trans went out it was acting funny.

I have now:
Rebuilt the Trans
Replaced bushing
Added solid mounts (this would make shifting harder)
replaced oil

Tomorrow my keen mechanic will be coming over to help me work on my shifting issues. I hope we can solve this....

Oh almost forgot

My through out bearing is making horrible terrible noise
bouncing, grinding ...ect
but when I press in the clutch it goes away

Ughhh this car has such a strong personality its not even funny

Blackbyrd 08-25-2012 04:32 PM

a oem shift coupler later and the car is running on the road again

so much for the flashy stompski coupler.... for sale soon

The car literally is going side ways now off of turns and off the line tire burns

I can't believe the HP difference

I guess its mostly due to the engine being more planted in the drive train
along with a little mods
