Case Number Question
Hi,
Im talking with a guy about a car he has, 70t, and he is telling me the case number ( we have discussed exactly where it is and what it should be, and agree he's looking in the right place) is 902789, which obviously doesnt make any sense. Any ideas what Im missing? Thanks for any help! David |

Should start with a 6 and not enough digits.

Uh, yeah, I get that...Thats why I wrote the post. Where factory replacement cases numbered like this, or is there some other reason it might have an odd number?

Factory replacement cases were blank IIRC. BUT I believe some had engine types stamped on them. Have the guy take a digital pic of the area on a macro setting. Also of the engine and underneath.
There are more than enough pics on this site that you can send him to confirm the area in question or if you have an engine available, take one yourself and send it to him. Correct Serial # AND engine type...gives you two references to ID an engine.

That engine number if correct is a 901/01 motor from a '65. That's an aluminum case.
Ask the seller if the number is facing towards the back of the car to confirm. This would obviously not be the original motor to the car but engine swaps happen all the time. Martijn

Thanks Martijn, he and I just figured that out. Its an engine made from 1/65 to 7/65. He says though that it is readable by just turning your head, in other words, right reading. Are you saying it should be backwards, with the 9 at the bottom of the casting lug?
Thanks, David |

The aluminum case has the serial on the side of the support facing towards the rear of the car while the magnesium case has the serial on the side of the support facing towards the right side of the car. The change in the case occurred in late 1967 during the 1968 model year.

OK, well now Im getting more confused. First, the Red Book, which I agree is good information but may be mistaken in some ways, clearly lists this engine, 902789, in the 'o' series, built 1/65-7/65. The 66 and 67 engines are much higher numbers in the series. Second, my 67 vin 306038, with original engine 909566, which I believe is an aluminum engine, has the number facing the right side, not the back of the engine. Clearly one of the guidelines is not correct, or?

Look at this thread, and a link in it to my thread on Early 911S Registry:
Third number on engine case I have collected a little data, and can only tell you what I understand based on that data. Sent you a PM.
