the smell was coming from the area of the fan belts (smoke as well); no it will not crank, will not respond to the key. all lights work. Thanks for your interest

Oh damn, a burned out Alternator??? that would be the only electrical component in the area that would burn out and smoke. Hopefully it is the internal regulator, much cheaper to replace. You see, if the regulators brushes wear down then it would be rubbing on the brush holder on the alternator's rotor and create friction to potentionalyl cause the smoking effects. Did that make sense???
When it shut down, did the alternator light come on in the gauge? If the alternator was going out it will not charge the battery and drain it ergo kill the car and have insufficient amps to crank the starter. If you can get a jump to help the battery crank then shut off immediate to verify the battery was drained due to a failing alternator or regulator. Do you have access to tools there?

no the alternator light did not come on, while I was driving, it acted like there was a fuel starvation problem, seem to be not running on all cylinders but warning lights did not activate when I took the load off the engine I could not accelerate the up to 3200 rpm and it quickly died .thanks for your effort.
Right now the car is parked in the Williams Mobil gas station and I am in a motel across the street . The mechanic will not be in until monday morning. It was suggested that I tow the car to 191 miles to Turbo kraft in Mesa,Az. I can't contact them. so I was wondering if I should just tow it there now but after reading your post any one should be able to replace an alternator maybe even me. No tools but I am going to go polk around |

When the battery drains while in motion, it will appear to bog down and when the voltage drops it will stop and will not re-start due to low voltage and amps. It will feel like "not on all cylinders due to lack of sufficient spark.
Yes, any decent mechanic can remove the alternator but will they have the spanner wrench to remove the fan belt and know how to drop the alternator from the housing? Also you will need to remove the motor mount bar so the fan can tilt back and out, this will require a floor jack to hold the engine while the mount is removed. Man sorry to rain on your parade ![]()

Sounds remarkably similar to a problem I had with mine shortly after I bought it. The regulator failed, but failed in such a way that the warning light did not come on.
'84 Carrera - Elect. Failure, car towed come. I did get the alternator out of mine without messing with the motor mounts, but I would not want to try it on the road without all of my tools.

You can without removing the motor mounts but it will be tight.

Give me a clue, now she starts as sweetly as ever revs effortlessly and there are no warning
signals. What do I do, start driving in the directions of Mesa to have her checked out??? But there is something wrong and it is not going to fix its self . There was significant smoke to indicate friction and there was an electrical order Thanks for all the help |

Your battery has re-gained it's charge and amps while sitting. But if you drive for 10-20 minutes it will die again. If you can check the volts you will see it steadily drain.

Doyou have AAA service, they will check your charging system for free and verify a failed component

OK I will try that;AAA towed me here but to tell you the truth, in my experience AAA will always sell you a battery but let me not be negative.
OK so if I do have charging problems what do I do at primarily a gas station ;or If I don't have charging problems, do I drive Mile to mesa,AZ ;or does AAA tow me and do I first get conformation that Turbo Kraft will take the car. Thanks again. And let me apologize for not knowing how to proceed. Thank you for your efforts. Regardless of the final outcome I feel empowered by the forum. This only the 2nd time in my life time that I have been stopped on the Highway and had to get a motel , once in st George and now here. Its amazing really how many highway miles I have driven. Every time I get into my Porsche I drive at least 800 miles round trip. I can't sit though a movie without going to the bath room but I am good for a whole tank of gas in the Porsche. Thanks |

No worries Brother, we'll figure it out.
No need to buy anything from AAA, I have them come out all the time if I suspect something and give me a print out on my car and my family's cars. We just need to confirm our suspicions that it is the alternator's regulator. AAA will confirm an issue with the alternator. If true then it is most likely the internal regulator in our 3.2's. This way you can specify the fix and not be charged for other diagnosis. I suggest not driving it if the regulator is out, it is supposed to default to not allow charging but if failed the other way, it can over charge your battery. If you have the AAA premium or plus the mileage should be covered all the way to the shop. I am sure they will take you but not sure if they can work on it right away.

The 'fuel starvation' problem you speak of coupled with the smoke and burning smell near the alternator is certainly the alternator. The car will miss, sputter, and die when the alternator goes out - and the light may never ever come on. This is the same issue I had - and the only way is to fit a new alternator. Good luck - you can probably do it yourself though.

This is a great thread....well at least for me, this just recently happened on my 84. I noticed a little bit of a hard start, like the batt wasn't fully charged...then 30 minutes later all hell broke loose--i thought the motor had blown ( my first 911) I limped the car home and checked the battery voltage it was 9.3v and the alternator was smoking like mad...I called Dave at TRE, and he took the time to help...this forum is amaizing!! So on that note I pulled the alternator and ordered one from PP......we will see!!
