Question Can't remove pulley bolt!

I decided to try and tackle the pulley seal replacement on my '82 911SC. Semi-dropped the engine, but I can't get the pulley bolt off.

I first tried my old, crappy 1/2" impact gun, no dice. Went out and purchased a higher quality one, Craftsman Pro rated at ~500 ft/lbs, and it still won't move. Tried a new air hose and connectors, thinking maybe the line was restricting the air flow, no improvement. It's a 20 gallon tank @ 100 psi, and it will run the gun for plenty of time before the pressure drops enough to kick on the compressor, so I think I have adequate air.

The car is on jack stands, wheels in the air, trans coupler removed (left in first gear for coupler re-alignment), so my guess is that a big-ass breaker bar is just going to turn the engine over, backwards, even if I have somebody hold the brakes.

Any ideas for what to try next?? I'm assuming heat and/or PB-blaster type tricks are useless on this kind of bolt?

Place it in 5th gear, not 1st.

Guarantee it will work with it in 5th......

Do you know anyone with an Ingersol Rand impact wrench you can borrow? Seriously...I've loaned mine out when "others" couldn't get the task accomplished. Or, can you get a 3' brealer bar (section of pipe) in place...I've also seen a 3' pipe accomplish what my I/R couldn't...good luck!

Try raising the pressure to 125 psi. That should break it loose.

Ingersol Rand 1/2 impact gun,
a good impact socket.
Turn the compressor to 125 psi, as high as it can go
Flame the bolt,

and it will go.

Forget that Pro Rated Sears Brand gun. It is crap. Buy what the Pros buy, an Ingersol Rand.

Try this with a 3 foot pipe extension on your ratchet + PB Blaster.

Just for clarity, I'm talking about the CRANK pulley bolt, not the fan pulley bolt shown above.

I'll try breaker bar with cheater pipe, 5th gear.

On the impact gun, I know IR's are the way to go. But I need an impact gun infrequently and was hesitant to pay the IR $$$. Sears is going back.

I just did this yesterday. Use the breaker bar with pipe. I had to use a 3' pipe and it broke loose.

Yup. Mine just came loose as well. About 40" of cheater/breaker bar, 5th gear, e-brake, and pretty much leaning into the bar.

Here I thought I was doing things the easy way with the rattle gun, but it turns out old school saved the day. Too long of a lever on too small of a bolt, then keep applying more and more force until something gives.... "POP!" I immediately knew that I either achieved my objective or broke something costly... Fortunately, it was just the bolt popping loose.

Thanks to all who responded!

I think you did yours with the engine out, lock the flywheel?
