Porsche Crest Why does my axle look different?

Let me start by saying I'm new here but have had 3 PorSChe's in my life. Starting with my 80"s 944 then my 99 Boxster and now my '82 911 Frankenstein project. I call it that because from (here say) of its history it started out as a 911 SC targa but now its a 911 slant nose, turbo bodied convertible. One of my problems is my drivers side rear Axel. It was torn and worn so i decided to change it. It had no serial number to go by so i went with the year and model and $400 and 1 axle and hub later and its all the wrong parts. Every time I look up the axle it shows one without a hub but mine has one on it as a solid piece not one bolted on. it's driving me crazy. I need help. Here is the car I will post a pic of the Axle soon.

If you have the outer drive hub as part of the axle then the shaft is mid 85 and later. It uses 6 10mm allen bolts, 8mm allen wrench, against the trans.

I think you mean you have a 1 piece half shaft with the axle splined stub as part of it. Is that what you pulled out of the car or was it a spare or not installed? The axle nut for the shaft has a very high torque setting, IIRC about 320 ft lbs and that means a BIG torque wrench. Get a new axle nut as well. I reused mine once and it backed off slightly, but enough to ruin the hub before I could feel it. (if you have the castelated nut with cotter pin, then never mind previous comment)

Sorry for the blurry pic. I took the top one off of the car . The boot was split that's why it has plastic on it. The bottom one is the one sold to me on ebay for an 82 911 sc but the length does not match and it doesn't have a stub but I think it wouldn't work anyway. I don't see any serial numbers on the old one(top of pic)

The one with the tip s the one I pulled off. Breaker bar and a pipe did the job.I did it before I posted this but thanks for the removal advice anyway. Where can I get one at a reasonable price that will match? When I look around all I see are the ones without the tip representing an 82 model but that's obviousl on the wrong replacement. wrong since the new one is not it. Its been a while sitting so I cant even get my money back.

I found some numbers on the drive shaft. It says "loebro 21 87 W Germany 06 00" or 08 00. Any ideas?

What are you asking? The axle you have seems to be a later type, as Bruce said.

You car would have originally come with the 100mm CV joints (and the smaller, 8mm?, bolts), but it may have had either the output flanges - or the entire transmission - replaced with the later type at some point after it was built.

If that stub axle is fixed (no bolts it in and cannot be detached from the axle), then it's almost certainly an 108mm CV with 10mm bolts, used on late 915's and G50 cars. Or a one-off

Source a replacement axle for a later car, it will look like the one you took off.

As a side note, those 915 output flanges are relatively rare/expensive, not to mention desirable for folks using 915's hard - like 3.6/turbo conversions and racers.

The correct part number is 911-332-024-15-M60. Pelican has them.

I just did this axle and bearing replacement on my 85 Targa non Turbo body. Pelican Parts requestex I read off the code off the trans to be absolutely certain before I ordred the pair.

Mine happened to be the pre-85.5 production that uses the axle you pictured without the spindle.

I may be wrong but I belive your wide body uses the axle with the spindle as you discovered when you removed it

Wow! Thanks guys. Im happy to have nice people like yourselves to help me. I guess I will have to eBay the axle I bought without the flange and get the later model axle. With the few numbers on it I was figuring an 87 axle but will look at the one recommended by you guys. Thanks again. I want to get it back on the road again. Had a hum so I started with that but I think I will replace the wheel bearing too. I see the ones that look like one housing instead of a bearing and race. Anyone know which is better? I want to keep it but its getting a little overwhelming. Thanks again guys.
