Because today we shipped our first two sets of customer 17" Porsche replica wheels :)

Thanks so much to everyone who contributed to this project. We couldn't have done it without your input, wisdom, trust and patience. A truly collaborative effort :)

Another busy photo shoot of the 17" BZ wheels this week. This time on the 85 Carrera at the famous Cranbrook Institute and museum. Again, these are just my iPhone snaps.

We can do the 9 and 11. Assuming it has 930 flares probably ET-3 to ET-21 in the front and ET-21 to ET-27 for the rear. Unless it has turbo trailing arms. $4552 plus shipping for these.

I'll have to check on prices for the 934 set. Any idea what backspacing or offset it is going to need? I haven't played with many 934s (zero).

Looks like a 17x 14 is feasible but we need a ballpark offset or backspace to know for sure and to price. Let me know if you can.

They're here !

Well, this Wednesday three wheels arrived. Apparantly one wheel decided it was too cold to go to Australia this time of year, so got off in Germany, while the others continued on their way. The authorities caught up with the wayward wheel, sunning itself in a corner, and duly sent it on to complete it's journey, arriving two days after the others in time to enjoy an Antarctic blast.

Here's a mock-up

Awesome, thanks Paul.

I will add better photos after I get some tyres on the rims

They look great. Thanks for posting.

The wheels are almost as cool as the car. Love that color what size are the wheels in the picture?

We test fitted the Carrera wheels on a Turbo Look last Saturday, at the local cars and coffee meet. We're not shy. They fit but are not exactly the correct specs for this model. Still, they look pretty nice.

As customers are now starting to receive their 17" BZ wheels I've started a new thread titled "Show Us Your BRAID Wheels" where you can post pictures of them on your car (or here if you prefer)

so if you install a set of wheels on your 930 without the OE spacers the extended OE studs are going to stick out 28mm further and you wont' be able to use your OE lug nuts. You could replace the studs with shorter ones or you could do what one of our customers did and just add the closed end lug nuts over the oen end lug nuts he used to bolt them on.

What color did that customer use to match the center caps against the black center? And how did they paint the contours silver? :)

Look really nice!

Where can you order the shorter studs?

Cheers

And I quote:

"When I painted the wheel caps I didn't have any satin black, so I painted them matt black, after they were dry I rubbed off the logo carefully then to get the satin finish I rubbed them with my bare hand to "polish" them. Worked well."

Pelican has the shorter studs. Just search for a 84 911 Carrera.

I just checked availability for 11"x17"s but they show 10.5" to be the widest. I saw in a previous post that you said to call Pelican. Is that still the case?

Try these:

Pelican Parts - Product Information: PEL-BZ11X17-RSR

Pelican Parts - Product Information: PEL-BZ11X17-STD

You shouldn't have to call.

I see there is some interest in how the centre caps were done, so I will attempt to explain in more detail.

I started with the Silver Centre Caps part no: 901 361 032 00.

I first wiped the caps clean with a clean cloth. I used a micro fibre cloth.

I then painted them with 2 to 3 light coats of Killrust Matt Black allowing a minimum of 16 hours between coats, as per the paint instructions. Too thick and it may cause problems when exposing the logo, although the first cap had about five coats while experimenting getting the appearance right.

When dry I wet a paper towel with metholated spirits the lightly rubbed (and small areas) over the logo to expose the silver underneath. Metho served to soften the paint enough to rub off. Turpentine may be a bit strong and remove the wrong areas, although I didn't try, again because I didn't have any available. The paper towel is abrasive enough to remove the desired areas.

Now the fiddly bit….For the "fine detail", such as the shield edge, I used a scalpel (hobby knife) to gently scrape the edges and some high points that were cast at a different height the rest of the crest. You'd be amazed how uneven the crest is. A gentle wipe with the paper towel with metho every now and then, to remove "debree" and keep the paint "soft". This stopped the paint from chipping and coming away from areas that I want to keep covered in paint.

When the crest is finished, wipe with the clean cloth then rub over the whole surface, in a circular motion, with the palm of the hand to remove the matt finish. Again don't rub too hard. The idea is to use the skins natural oils to "polish" the cap. Rub too hard and it's start again !! Check against the wheel for the desired "satin" finish.

Once happy that the finish is matched and even, again wipe over with the cloth.

Clip into place, ensuring the shield points to the valve cap (for all the concours people out there). For some reason it is actually aesthetically pleasing.

Job done !

Cheers

PS: After I had finished, thinking I had come up with something different and feeling proud of myself, I found somebody on PP had already done the same thing. Just proves that nothing is new.

OldSpool87 08-27-2015 04:12 PM

Great results! Sorry if I missed it, but which cap served as the basis for your hand rubbed creation?

My Braids are coming and I want to be ready.

Thanks!

OZ930 08-27-2015 05:34 PM

Sorry OldSpool87, I missed that, so I have amended the post,

Thanks

Hi Paul,
Are the RSR finish BZs sold by Braid UAS finished any differently to those supplied by Braid in Spain?
Put another way: If I buy in Europe are they anodized too, or painted soft silver?
Thanks, James

All the same James, but, of course, we'd prefer you to buy them through our hosts.

There will be 21% VAT in addition as you are still in the EU.
