Engine dies then starts.....
Hello,
I have had my 89 for about 9 months. It has recently started dying on me both while moving and at idle. I turn the car off and either wait 5-10 seconds or start cranking right away and the car turns over sputters a bit but does fire up again. Just to give you a reference I pulled up to a red light and it died. I turned the key off, turned the flashers on and proceeded to try and start the car. After about 4 tries the car fired up, well before the light turned green. It cranks strong, it seems like it is losing spark? All other electricals are fully functional. I have searched and I know there are lots of threads on this but it seems when the DME goes the car is dead until you swap it out...my situation only last a few minutes at most... Thoughts? |

At the rear of the engine (all the way forward on top the flywheel, in the worse place to reach, are two sensors - speed and reference. When they flake out, the car dies. It may catch a few seconds later, or need to be restarted. Plenty of other things can be suspect, but this is a pretty common problem. Don't replace anything without troubleshooting. Look for a thread on troubleshooting this item. The sensors can be ohmed but you can also take a reading off a particular PIN of the DME connector. Look for THAT thread - which I'm not finding at this moment.... That one let me troubleshoot my husband's car and correctly diagnose the failed sensor. They're not cheap, so best to be sure before you replace.

No there is no fuel smell at all.
So will these speed sensors ultimately fail? |

swap out your DME relay with a known good one before analyzing your other sensors.

Yeap,..get that DME relay changed right away...WAY before you hop into the sensors....
see what you have then. BEST! Doyle

Thank you for the replies.
From reading other post it seemed like when the DME went bad the car would not start again until it was replaced. Is that not the case? This situation is so intermittent that there would be no way to replicate and the car does start shortly after the engine dying. Does the DME gradually go bad or progressivly get worse? or does it normally die and you replace? Thanks again. |

It is a 20+ yr old electronic relay. It can die a slow death or quit suddenly, Swap it out with a new one and see if the problem goes away.
