I figured that was the only style plate appropriate for a fast, black car. They will have a real SR-71 in the new Nat. Air Space Museum hangar they're building near Dulles. There is also on on the deck of the carrier Intrepid in NYC.

OT - I heard some spare parts for an SR-71 showed up on eBay the other day - no joke.

Richard,

Why was the flywheel unuseable? Just curious.

The flywheel looked ok to my very untrained eye. Running my finger across it, the ridges were noticeable. Furthermore, there were some blue blemishes on the surface too. It felt almost like a unevenly worn brake rotor. I've heard horror stories about people cutting corners here and then getting clutch chatter in a brand new clutch - and G50's ain't cheap. Since Bentley says the G50 flywheel can't be resurfaced, but my wrench says it can be, I take him at his word when he says it need to be replaced. Resurfacing runs $150 and a new flywheel runs $215. So a risky $150 or a sure thing for $215 - I'd glady pay the $65 difference to not have to do this again in two weeks.

Thanks Richard. I'll see you Saturday for the reinstall, hopefully with Lu in tow. She was real excited about the engine drop...she described the whole thing to our son, especially how "big" your engine is!

Regards,

Jim

Jim, if I ever find a woman as interested in Porsche engines as Lu was, I will get on my knees and propose on the spot. You got yourself a catch!

Just realized that the majority of posts on this thread were from those of us at the drop: Richard, Marc, myself, Dan, Justin and Jim. We ought to start a Pelican East division!

Looking forward to seeing everyone again next Saturday for the install.

Richard - Sorry to hear about the flywheel but better to do it now then later. BTW, I thought your clutch was spring centered and not rubber centered ??

The first run of G50's were rubber-centered, which I had. My new one is the 240mm spring centered deal - same as '77 930's. Supposedly it's a much better design, though my original disc had plenty of life left in it. No point in leaving old parts in there though, as long as we're at it and the clutch kit is cheaper as a whole than buying the parts individually. Wait til you see my valve covers. I just took them out of the oven - painted them red, will sand off the raised "PORSCHE" letters, clear coat them and bake them again. They look awesome.

RS - didn't know some of the G50's had rubber centers. Interesting that Porsche didn't learn from their earlier mistake.

Can't wait to see the valve covers - they sound sweet! Do you have time to powder coat the fan b/c that in combo with the valve covers would be quite a statement.

I don't have time to deal with powder coating the fan right now, but will do it one day. This job has to be done by Fri. night to get the engine back in Sat. morning. The valve covers do look sweet. Third coat is going on in just a minute,
