962 Project - New build
I was in the garage of a friend yesterday that has started on a 962 project.
I was impressed of his knowledge of this car and his approach to build his dream car. The chassis will be built in the basement of his garage. He has spent about 2-3 years in collecting enough information to start building the chassis, but would like all the help he could get. So if you guys out there are able to help, we would be very grateful. I see that Wayne has a great thread here with many nice and detailed pictures. All kind of info would be great. drawings, sketches, pictures etc Can also send to email 930owner at gmai dot com Here is a couple of pictures of where he is at now. http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/a...obottom962.jpg http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/a...ret/mono05.jpg |
I have about 1/2 a gig of pictures of a 962 that I was helping with the sale of. But... A lot of the pictures are not the best exposure and focus (cheaper cameras are easily confused). That is really too much to send unless you really need them.
A few suggestions: - Wayne (Mr. Pelican...) has four 962s and a BUNCH of connections. He would be a great resource for specific pictures and measurements. - Canepa has a pretty good series of photos showing a frame up restoration of 962-170. It will give you a good idea of what is under the skin and maybe they can provide full resolution version of any photos. 1991 Used Porsche 962C Team Trust at Canepa Serving Scotts Valley, IID 5116604 - Ask for specific needs. I'm sure you will receive more pictures then you can look at. |

Hello guys
Here is the owner of the project! nice to have good Porsche friends to help for useful information. What is of most interest at the moment is detailed measures of pick up point for front A-arms, steering steel suport bracket interface to the Monocoque side walls. Also exact position of interface holes for front sway bar into the Mono sides. I have all details of the measures and inside reinforcements in the Mono, but are not 100% sure if I have correct measures for all interface holes regards to the front suspension. Thank you for your interest in this project. |
Thank you Quicksilver.

Interesting project. Are you going for nearly 100%, or a facsimile/interpretation?
Bruce Canepa and Kevin Jeannette and their businesses come to mind. Dave Klym as well. Some of my local friends are in the business having restored or refreshed many of the cars in the Drendel collection recently sold at auction. I got to see some of this fine work in progress. Lots of details. Lots of resources around. If the car is going to be more toward 100% and driven on a race track, I suggest being very careful with the aero and related components. For example, desirable spring rates are affected by aero. And I think some 962s had special set ups for wheel bearing cooling... et cetera. Good luck and share more info when/if you are able. |
I have a few pictures, here are a couple:

Hello Flieger
I have the Porsche 962 mono drawings, but it is a copy of a copy of a.. so I am not 100% sure if I have correct measurements of the threaded holes/drilled holes for front suspension interface. Your pictures displays what I am looking for, but without the measures between them and so on... I work for a world leading drilling equipment supplier, and make of the different parts, all from sheet metalwork through moulding and software is not the big issue in this project, but to get the 100% correct measures. Mahler9th: Yes the goal is as close to as possible, I have checked against the 120mm shorter 956.109 (or 108) owned by a Swedish Porsche guy, but unfortunately he sold this car. |
Regards to aluminium moulding, the supplier of Porsche Panamera aluminium suspension parts are located her in the south Norway! So it would have been a dream to get the 3D scan/mould measurements or similar to uprights, crossmember between engine and gearbox ++ Then I could have get the parts mould by an Porsche supplier!
I also have a friend that was working for Hydro and danish Bang & Olufsen, that was involved in Porsche`s project with sandwich construction for 962, but the project was closed. Bang & Olufsen was in the 1980`s world leading in aluminium surfacing process. |
Have you talked to Wayne Dempsey yet?
|
hello, i am new to porsche and a new found passion for porsche. This may sound stupid but what exactly is that, that you are building? is that the chassie of the vehicle that the eventual body panels go on?
|
It is a sheet aluminum monocoque chassis joined together with rivets.

Ok and in the centre of that is where the driver would sit and that would also be the base for all the gages and so on to be placed?

Hello Flieger
Thank you for your good respons. No, I have not talked to Wayne yet, do you think if I call him that he will give the needed information that is what I am looking for? |

I wonder if Deiter at Andial would have any documentation of the location of the pickup points. They were Porsche Motorsports North America in the 80s and they pretty much touched all of them in this hemisphere.
I'll see if I can swing by on my way south to Newport at lunch. |

Here are a few showing the front suspension of a later car (962-170)
The pelican site reduces the resolution to 800x600 but these are either 4000x3000, 3504x2336, or 2592x1944. If you need any specific one at full res just let me know. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347041483.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347041512.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347041534.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347041565.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347041602.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347041627.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347041662.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347041688.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347041712.jpg |
Hello Quicksilver
I really appreciate your willness to help me getting this information. Look forward to hear if you can get some details |

The project Porsche 962 chassis number will be: 962N-001
The "N" states built in Norway, and the first letter in my last name. 001 the first one and maybe the only one that will be built in Norway! Link to worlds 962 chassis numbers. World Sports Racing Prototypes - Porsche 962 chassis numbers |
Fran Hall at RCR might be of some help to, he is also a great guy. He is building a car in the light of a 962 and may be able to help on some points.

Managed to make it by Andial and talked to Deiter...
... and learned a little more. The cars never went through Andial. The motors were the only part they did. All most all the motors went through them for rebuilds. Asked him if there was any directions he would look for info and his first recommendation was Bruce Canepa. Bruce probably has info about the dimensions but even if he doesn't he has 962-170 to measure. He just recently picked it up and I bet he will be stripping it back to the bare chassis in preparation to selling it. Another good reference that is almost the same time zone as you would be Trevor, ex of Group C Ltd in England. Until they shutdown recently they were probably the biggest supplier of 962 parts and rebuilding of cars. Trevor is still doing 962 work as is mentioned on the Group C website. The last suggestion is to contact anyone who ran a 962 team back then. Seeing that they were responsible for their own chassis I suspect someone has the basic measurements to check if a chassis is square. |
Hello Quicksilver.
Yes Trevor is a helpfull person, I have called him earlier, and he helped me a lot. I can contact him again. I will also give a call to Bruce. Thank you for information. |
I have lots of photos of my 962's but I do have a friend that has plans/CAD for everything you need but not sure he would just hand them out.. he even has the tub plans.
I actually sold this car to Matt Drendel then bought it back after he got the Holbert 62. It is a factory tub http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...n/DSC03697.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...n/DSC03701.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...DSC03702-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...n/DSC03703.jpg |

Interesting to see the differences in the chassis. Here is the nose of 962-170 which is almost the last Porsche 962 chassis produced. They went full monocoque on the nose of it. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1347285272.jpg Interesting how racecars develop over time. |
Subscribed. Now this is a project. It makes everything else we're doing on this board look amateurish.

Hi guys. Yes, I do have four of these puppies now. I can help out with measurements, etc. but I need the requests to be super-detailed so I'm not guessing at what you need (and then have to go back and do it again). I'm really, really short on time these days. If you want, you can post a picture and put arrows on the picture showing what dimensions you are looking for, so that it's crystal clear.
I have four chassis, all are different: - 962-121 which is a factory Porsche chassis (won Sebring, 1987 & 1988!) - 962-110 (CK6-10). Kremmer car from 1987, Thompson chassis - 962-106b which is an RLR chassis (won the Nurburgring in 1987) - 962-138 all-carbon fiber Schuppan chassis All of them except the RLR chassis use mostly factory suspension parts, but they are all still slightly different, each and every one. -Wayne |
Hello Wayne, and thank you for your positive attitude.
I will make a detail drawing in Autocad, scan it to pdf and send to you. I have no hurry, so I wait for a while, since you say you are short in time. I can also call you first. Thank you Trond O |
Hello VZ935
I send you a private message regards to your comment above The body panels I will probably buy from Dave Slack Trond O |

Hello
I have been in contact with Derek yes, both by mail and phone. |
Hi guys,
Just got an update from my friend (Proj_962_Norway) who is building this 962. He sent me an updated picture of where he's at in the build. http://i867.photobucket.com/albums/a...ret/mono01.jpg |
My friend helidoc was rebuilding a 962 at one point before he sold. If you search under 962 and find his thread it could be helpful.

Sub'd this is epic!
Beautiful fab work too. Has the builder had any other significant Porsche race car ownership/experience? Is this his first total ground up fabrication of a historic race car or has he done others Porsche or otherwise ? Thanks for sharing !! |
Wow, great project ... please keep the udpates coming !
