Won't go into reverse when running
I recently purchased a 78 SC about a month ago. However, the car just recently stopped going into reverse when it is running. It is fine when the car is off and you start it in reverse. Everything else works great on the transmission. The transmission was replaced less than a year ago by Kahler's in Dublin. Right now it only has under 6,000 miles on it. I have searched the archives and the only thing I could find is that it needs to be adjusted. Is this all that needs to be done or is there more. Thanks for any help.

Stanley,
Reverse is the only gear that does not have a syncro on it (I believe) so would wonder if the clutch free play is not set too tight ? With the motor off it would work fine and when the motor is running the gear will not want to engage as its possibly turning a bit. Try confirming that the clutch is pushed totally in, then put the gear lever in any gear, then try putting it into reverse. Let us know what happens... Joe

Yes, you need to check that your clutch is fully disengaging and is not dragging ... freeplay should be 15 mm to 20 mm at the pedal. Be absolutely sure your cable isn't frayed and stretching! You have to visually check the throwout bearing lever while an assistant depresses the clutch pedal! Best to put it up on jack stands!

Stanley,
If it does not go into gear with the motor running but will with the motor off, then my best guess is that the clutch is not completely dis-engaging when you push the pedal in. This can happen in several ways and hope its adjustment and not a cable as Warren mentioned! That said, I have had a clutch cable go, and it was exactly as he described. Next thing for you is to check your freeplay as Warren described and if its not correct then it needs to be taken care of. You probably should not drive the car much like this. The syncros may allow you to get the car into gear right now but it could really be putting a strain on the tranny. Just because its going into gear, things would not be "happy" inside and its best to correct this and soon. Syncros last only so long and its best not to push them too hard. Joe

My 78 SC tran reverse gear gets querky evey now and then. Try putting it into 5th gear first and then into reverse.
