Only one brake light out

I know there are a million brake light threads, but couldn't find an answer to this one.

I have only one inop brake light (passenger side). It's not the bulb, as I tried the bulb from the working brake light. On the passenger side the reverse light and tail light work (I think the tail light and brake light is the same, no?). I can't remember.

I think it is a switch or wire but not sure. As I understand there are two brake light switches under the pedals but thy are wired is series. So why would one light work and not the other? Where do the signals split from the pedal to the lights? Anyone else have this problem?

sounds like a wire. With all the lights on, I'd have someone step on the brake pedal while I get underneath with a test light and start probing the wires to the housing.

The lamp sockets are notorious for weak spring contacts at the back. Use a bent o ring pick to pull it forward a little. Or it may be a loose wire in the housing.

And of course, check the ground(s). Typically a brown wire.

Yes I have read about the spring contacts. I'm not exactly sure what that means but I will take a look. If not that then I'll check out the wires. .

Might also be a diode in the harness. It seems like there's one on that side, for some reason.

Ha I knew someone was going to post the wiring diagram. I appreciate it but that is all Greek to me. Checking the springs now.

Ok I saw the clips and tried to pull them out a little. Waiting for my brake light tester to come home from her weekend trip...

There is a diode on the passenger side for running lamps. At least for an '86. Link to my adventure here.

What the heck has burned under my dash??
