I have always said that the cheapest way to get a project like this is to buy someone else's headache, and a deeply discounted price. That is how I stumbled into my V8 914. I picked it up cheap and just had to fix all the PO stuff.
It was a very fun toy, and very fast on the street and track, but I would not trade my SC for one.
Believe it or not I actually made money on that project. Wait, I made money on the last two Porsches I bought and sold, and I stand to make money off the SC if I ever decide to sell it. There must be a lesson in there somewhere, but I am too slow to find it.
Anyway, most people who build conversions like this get in over their head and spend a lot of money on them, only to realize that they will probably not get it all back when they sell it. That is why it is cheaper to buy one than to build one, in most cases. I am the exception because I love to horse trade and scrounge parts, and hate paying retail for anything. I also hate to pay someone else to do something that I might be able to figure out.
If I were you I would try and find this guy a decent conversion car at a good price, then nickle and dime him to death getting the bugs out :-)
