Your annual avg. running costs for your 911?

Tomorrow I have a PPI scheduled for a 90' 964 C2.

I am curious, what has been your average annual running costs for your air cooled 911? Please list if you have a SC, 3.2 or 964. I am most interested in repairs & maintenance (not insurance or fuel costs).

Thanks.

LOL, I try not to think about it!!!!

I have a spreadsheet that I keep on my SC, but don't have it handy.

I budgeted $1,500/year in maintenance costs for my SC and have yet to get close to that. BUT I put less than 2,500 miles per year on mine. A few oil changes per year, brake pads, and the incidental repair: tie rods, cv joints, ball joints, shocks, and various little things that creep up. Also, I do all of my own repairs so my costs don't include any labor. I guess what I'm saying is there are too many variables to be able to assign an absolute number to it. As long as you keep up on the maintenance and space out the major repairs I think you can keep it around $1,000 - $1,500 per year, but that's just my opinion.

Having said that, I've spent around $10k on the car the last few years for track preparation. But I don't consider that regular maintenance.

I drive my G50 Carrera pretty much every day.

For the last 3 years, I've had nothing but regular maintenance, which I do myself. I've had a couple of small things, like replace the cyl head temp sensor and replace the oil pressure sender. I also replaced the 2 flywheel sensors.

I keep records of all my costs, so I could dig them out and give an exact number, but there's no way in 3 years that I've spent more than $900 in repairs and maintenance.

So, say approximately $300 per year, that'd be estimating on the high side.

That would include 3 oil and filter changes, a trans fluid change, an air filter, a couple of brake fluid flushes, and the minor repairs above.

I've had my SC for 5 months now, and have put 5K miles on it in that time.
My costs:
50 Oil Change
400 Set of new wheels/tires, mostly offset by selling the old ones
300 Tools like torque wrench, impact wrench, etc.
30 Oil line
60 Dr. Colorchip (great stuff!)
40 Books
30 Soap/Wax

Around 1K total so far. And that doesn't include countless hours taking apart doors or heating ducts or time on the forums. All told, its been great! Also, a lot of my expenses are capital - I won't need to buy those tools or books again. Other things are one-time as well - I won't need new wheels or more touchup paint for a long time.

There are a TON of variables. How much driving is the obvious 1st point. Autocrossing or track days run the cost WAY up but the fun level pegs out at 11.

I do a lot of autocrossing but I do it just for fun and I don't care if I am real fast. I have 15 inch wheels so the tire choice is very limited, but cheap all season tires.

The 1990 is a 22 year old car. Some items will be old and tired no matter the mileage. Throw a good paint job at the car and you just spent 7 to 10 grand. An engine rebuild is another 10 to 12 large.

If you are happy to drive it as is and can resist the "while I am in there" upgrades you can keep the cost low. It is a slippery slope.

With a clean PPI, in first 2 years of ownership of my '91 turbo, I've more than doubled what I paid for it, excluding paint and nothing truly outrageous ($35K +)!!!

Budget about $1500 to $2000 to "baseline" the car. After that maybe $300-$500 per year.

By "Baseline", I mean tires replaced, brakes rebuilt, all fluids changed, plugs changed, valves adjusted, etc.

Once that is done, it should be smooth sailing.

On a 964 Turbo about 2,000 a year on normal maintenance. Of course I just replaced the EZ 69 ignition module which cost 3700, and 2 years ago the Turbo for 2K. So if something goes wrong the costs are high. Electronics are expensive and most are not rebuildable. Make sure the PPI checks your a/c evaporator for leaks that is an expensive repair, 500 for the evaporator and a days labor or more.
I think the 964's are very reliable if well taken care of but stuff gets old.

+1 on the baseline..initial costs to bring it up to your standard..then it is a slippery slope

To just help make it seem more rational in our love of these cars. The Ferrari and Lambo guys say you MUST budget a $1/mile beyond gas/oil and insurance. Drive to work just cost them $60 in budget'd maintenance

Other than the freak'n sun roof issues (yes plural) my 964 has been nuts reliable for years, but then again its at a whopping 24k miles now.

I have owned my 83 911sc for 8 months now. Have put about 3500 miles on it and have invested about $1000 in repairs. I have done all my own work and some of the stuff I didn't really need to do but wanted to. Other things were necessary like rear brakes and e-brake replacement.

I have a 78SC in decent mechanical order. ignoring upgrades or other non necessary things I would say in the 500-700 range. Most of that is spent on oil, air filter, fuel filter, oil filters, spark plugs etc. On top of that I would say that I do a few projects a year. Last winter I did the spring arm bushings which was about $100. I would say I spend another 100-500 on projects if I feel I need them but I have no serious mods or hard core upgrades, that is just things to improve drive-ability of things like that.

Regards
Dave

Last year? $25k or so. That said, I've replaced pretty much everything that moves.

i just spent $50 on polishing pads, glaze over the weekend, just to bring the shine back on my black paint... a few months before that i think i got my 915 rebuilt by Gordon. i'm trying to forget how much I spent for the rebuild and that I got talked over by Steve W and Jeff G to put LSD in...

my spreadsheet still reminds me that i've spent close to twice the amount of the purchase price of the car on maintenance, repair, and upgrades over the course of five years I've owned the car. this amount includes the sale of parts i've gotten off the car... i try to do most of the stuff myself too...

Aside from bringing my suspension up to par?

about $500-1000 per year.
I pace myself with things to do, due in part to the lesson learned that it's always more fun to plan and look forward than to have it all at once.

I've had my 72 since 2004. On straight maintenance, I budget $2000/year, but don't come anywhere near that. However, I have had some major expenses - transmission rebuild, new clutch (while you're in there), new tires, stuff like that. It's worked out to less than $2000/year, including purchase of a 3.0L motor for a transplant, because the original motor needs rebuilding. Come to think of it, I'll bet $2500/year would cover not just all my maintenance, but my upgrades too. The trick is to look at it long term and budget accordingly: some years you'll spend $300 on oil changes and nothing else. Some years you'll spend $5k on a top end rebuild.

I DIY almost everything. I'll bet that's saved me $5-10k in the last 7 years.

87 targa, just over $6K and 14K miles over 4 years of ownership, - or about $1500/yr (or 44cents/mile) and decreasing - excluding insurance and gas.

Most of it was spent updating her and replacing wear out items. Most of the labor was mine. None spent for mods/paint. She came with the bypass, chip and new clutch. She needs new shoes, but no other significant expenses planed for now.

$8K over 9 years ownership of my '87. This was for maintenance not upgrades and I did some work myself. No major engine or trans work.
