yes. it should be attached to the LOW side line exiting the evap. wrap it with that black "tar" stuff to insulate it. its best if you can attach it at about the 4 or 5 oclock position or the 7 or 8. not on top.

Does the whole expansion valve coil need to be covered or only the pigtail part that's touching the low side line?

just the bulb. there is usually a clip that holds the bulb against the line.
basically, the bulb measures the temp of the refridgerant leaving the evap and opens or closes the expansion valve per the demand of the heat load

I've wondered if we could use some of that spray in expanding foam in this situation since getting the tape around the bulb can bt a PITA and hard to reach in tight spaces with a bunch of other stuff near and in the way.

it would suck when you have to replace it again.

Maybe not with the latex foam. Not the petroleum/solvent based stuff.

The correct position for the capillary sensing pigtail (aka 'bulb') is 12 o'clock, directly on top of the evaporator outlet tube.
You can use whatever insulating material you wish to wrap around the pigtail, however Prestite is the most common. And, don't forget to seal off the opening in the top of the evap box where the evap outlet pipe and TEV inlet pipe exit. You don't need to wrap the entire TEV in insulation, only the cap sensing pigtail. |
