Front and Rear Bumper Struts - Have Springs?

1980 SC. I attempted to tuck my bumpers in an inch by removing the rear bumper and drilling through the gas/oil compression strut. A rag to deflect the forceful geyser is a good idea. Ask me how I know.

I was surprised that when the oil leaked out after the gas was expelled, there was no way to compress the strut. It's as if there is a spring in there as well. I used a bar clamp and could barely get compression.

I suppose the right way to do this is to remove/replace the strut with bar steel or something suitable at the desired length. But I thought I'd check here first. I searched the forum and found several examples of this work but nothing about the stubborn to compress strut.

Any insight?

I would think that there is a way to compress as I had one go bad and the bumper stayed pushed in. This happened on the front after I pushed the car with my knee against the front bumper.

I think the easiest thing to do would be to get some of the euro crush tubes (which are just that) cut out and section the portion/amount you want to tuck and reweld the tube back together. That way you would still retain the "crush piece" designed in for crash worthiness that is incorporated into the end portion of the tube - pic below.

No idea if there is a spring or other mechanism inside the US version - but I would suspect there is something else to them as they are heavier then the Euro versions and I doubt that is due to fluid. While small, I made the swap for weight reasons...because it all does add up.
