1981 Porsche 911SC 3.0 motors - Cleaning it up for my father!

I discovered that my uncle who left his 1975 Porsche 911S Carrera had switched the engine out with this one.

Is it worth the rebuild?

It's actually not a simple question, however, you're probably better off with the 3.0 than the original mag case 2.7. You have to define if you mean "worth it" for you to drive and enjoy or "worth it" from a resale perspective? If it's the latter, very few rebuilds would create more resale value than the cost of the rebuild. If fact, very few repairs/restorations of any type add more value than the cost of the work.

depends on what you want to do with it? Rebuild to put in another car, OK. Rebuild to sell, probably not. Just sell it as is.

How was it established that the 3.0 motor needs a rebuild? Possibly it just needs a bit of TLC?

Well last night I had a guy come and see the car and the car itself is in quite good condition. The engine has been out for 9 years or so, but was running when taken out just needed a clutch there was a leaky fuel injector. My father wants it rebuilt but he wants it nice and clean before he goes. (Stage 4 Lung Cancer, doing fine ATM)

Possibly we want to sell it, just had a guy look at it last night but just to look. He said the engine is not that desirable. He wants it to race, but we were wanting to just make it run, and drive it.

It's 1975 911S with that engine, any rough estimate on value there?

Rebuild to use? Thats just my dads thinking. I was just wondering what value that engine has.

My father who would rather have it completely done up and cleaned instead of tinkering with it (He can't tinker with it anymore anyway). And I don't know cars at all, currently attempting to stick my head into it and learn.

The SC 3.0 is not a rare engine, but it is regarded as "bulletproof" by many. Maybe not desirable to a racer looking for crazy horsepower, but desirable for someone who is looking for a good solid 911 that will deliver performance AND be reliable. Porsche engines are very expensive to rebuild, but a good rebuild on 3.0 will easily provide 100K+ miles of use (vs. a Ferrari engine of the same generation that will require major work more often).

The decision here sounds like a personal one. You'll find two key pieces of advice here on this forum: 1. if you go with a rebuild, use a reputable shop as recommended here, and 2. get to know the air-cooled 911 and you may end up with the same passion for it that your father has.

We were kind of just checking the market on it, we thought the engine was something more special, clearly not the case now.

Now, with that. I'd assuming we are going to want to get the car up and running for ourselves.

As for the rebuild, have you heard of motor meisters ?

Hope you're kidding. Do a search and you'll likely form your own opinion of stay away, far, far away.

Wasn't kidding - My father found them before he was diagnosed. I'll relay the info (currently in chicago getting chemo done)

I'm not even sure the car needs a rebuild, like I said before, my father just wanted to have it cleaned up because he himself can't work on it anymore. It was running before the engine was taken out. I believe it just needs a new clutch and some other minor fixes.

You might think about buying a used engine to replace the SC motor (if the motor is bad), then sell the SC motor as a core. This would likely be your least expensive option to get the car running.

Oh, and as for MM...run Forest run!

How much is the SC engine worth?

Just read that in 1975 Porsche made 1500 Silver 911S for the silver anniversary.

My uncles Porsche was silver before he painted it black.

Not sure if that means much.

If it was running when removed then just reseal it and put it back in the car. Your car is worth far more with a running engine IN it than not.
****I can't stress this more****
STAY AWAY FROM MOTORMEISTER!!!!
They will take your money and return a pile of scrap to you.
