How you DON'T want to see your 911:(
![]() The tow truck driver and I discussed our plan to get the car on the bed. It was facing "in" a parking spot and wouldn't roll due to the wheels being locked up. I tried all I could think of to diagnose the problem and fix it right there but finally gave in. I had my son with me and we were 50 miles from home. When he started to winch it the car started up and backed itself onto the truck. (I could have sworn I flipped the kill switch to "off".) As soon as I processed what was happening, I reached up, opened the door and turned the ignition off. I had unlocked the steering column. We were extremely lucky that no one was injured and there was no damage to the car. The driver called another tow rig and we used that the lift the car back onto the bed safely. We then turned the car around to haul it facing forward. ![]() ![]()

Besides LeMans starts, another good reason for the ignition on the left!
Glad no one was hurt and there was no damage.

So the ignition was on and it was in reverse while getting winched?
Close call, well done for saving it. |

Sorry about your mishap! I know how much you enjoy the car. I'd say thats about as close you can get to serious damage without damaging the car. Did you determine what caused your wheels to lock?
By the way, missed you at the RSR color tour. It rained the whole day but we still had a good time.

Sorry to see that, hope there was no hidden damage. So the car is haunted and does what it wants, probably should get rid of it!

My son was with me and after I got to thinking what COULD have happened had it gone off with me at the door, reaching in. I was originally standing at the curb with my son, way away from the truck. The car started up just as the rear wheels touched the leading edge of the flat bed. I guess I sprinted to the door, opened it and switched the ignition whilst it was moving. It stopped where you see it. Ironically, this occurred about a block from the Meijer store in Brighton that the RSR tour started. We couldn't make it that day as we were on the east side of Michigan visiting my mom. My son will have a cool story to share in class Monday. ![]()

Were the wheels locked from turning (steering) or would the car not roll? So the ignition was on and it actually jump started as soon as the wheels turned. You are fortunate.

I activate the kill switch whenever it is parked but I think in the confusion and keeping an eye on my son and thinking about how serious of an issue I actually had I must have de-activated it. At the time I didn't know what the problem was. I knew the engine ran and it didn't SEEM to be a clutch issue. It wouldn't move in any gear and would stall the engine. It was only when it took off did I realize it was stuck in reverse. Normally, my son is pretty fidgety when we have to stand still but he did exactly what I needed and stayed out of harm's way through the entire ordeal.

Wow Wayne, that could have been much worse! I will file that away with a "remove coil wire before towing" footnote.

Same thing happened to my neighbor's Jeep, but with a lot more damage. The tow truck driver turned the ignition to the on position to turn the wheels, began winching with it in first and away it went. Being low geared, the Jeep just flew into the back of the tow truck bed, bounced back, stalled and rolled down the ramp into the garage door... It was quite the scene to behold. In the end, the tow truck, Jeep and garage door were all damaged pretty good.

yikes
it's easy to know what not to do - after having done it really glad it wasnt worse - these cars can do a little rough road driving and not be worse for wear - not like new cars
