First Engine Drop

Must be the season as I see a few threads on engine drops this week.
Anyway here are my questions:
All instructions say to disconnect the fuel lines. I found and disconnected them from the fuel filter (no accumulator on my 86). What other fuel lines do I need to disconnect before the engine drop?
Do I also need to disconnect hose #34?

Thank you Gerry for the picture.;)

Do a partial engine drop and you'll see what needs to be disconnected.

zippy_gg 10-31-2012 03:29 PM

Hmm... I expected more detailed from those with same model/year car.
I will be doing this drop solo with a jack so I'll have to be careful about balancing the engine while slowly lowering it (instead of dropping :D).

There are only 2 fuel hoses that need to be disconnected. The first is the high pressure supply line that exits the fuel filter and the second is the low pressure return line that hooks up at 11a. 34 does not need to be disconnected unless you are going to remove the MAF and intake elbow before engine drop.

I did mine solo as well; a little off-topic but I found it less nerve-wracking to lift the car off the motor than drop the motor from the car. I used 3 jacks (had 2, borrowed one), one on each side's jack pad, and a third to help keep the nose of the transmission centered in the tunnel until the rear was high enough to pull the motor straight back and out.

If your motor's up in the air balanced on one jack and it gets wobbly, and you're by yourself, there's little to do but get out of the way...

However you do it, go slow and keep an eye out for anything still connected or that got hung up as you separate the car and motor. Anything you missed or forgot to disconnect will be pretty obvious.

Good luck!

zippy_gg, sjf911 is correct. There are only the 2 fuel lines to disconnect. The others you have marked can stay connected.

Just go slow with the jack. Make a platform to give it more width if you can and it will stabilize things out.

14-pin connector
Ignition coil cable
Hose behind air box
2 hoses from throttle body going to the right side of engine bay
Square connector behind engine (center left)
CV joint
S-hose
Oil line to aux. thermostat

For clarity sake, the items in purple are the lines to be replaced once the engine is out of the car. I borrowed a picture posted by Gerry to try and identify the fuel lines I need to disconnect for the drop.
I tried disconnecting 11a but that little bugger is really tight...
Is the brake booster line represented in the diagram? I thought it was 34 but was corrected earlier.

After separating the tranny from the motor we checked the clutch and found it was worn down to the rivets on the flywheel side. Time for new Sachs parts!

The original Boge rear shocks were toast.

Congrats zippy_gg, let us know when you get it back together.

zippy_gg 11-03-2012 07:16 PM

You bet Fbeatty! But it may take a while as I am replacing all suspensions and brake components, and some electrical work.
I'll update this thread as I make progress.

fbeatty 11-03-2012 07:42 PM

Cool, keep in touch. I have to get the bell housing on my transmission fixed so I am in the same boat. It is going to be a while
