SC Windshield Wiper Problem

When I turn on my wipers, they first go down to toward the front hood about 2" and over the window seal before they head up onto the windshield. Is there an adjustment I can make on the motor or mechanism that will fix this.

Hmmm, As I recall the control arms are tied together in the trunk, probably PO or body shop may have installed it incorrectly after servicing it.

I am guessing here but I think you need get in there and re-position the control arms so the will start and end at the proper position.

When you shut it off where does it sit?

Do you have a bentley for your year?

The arms are on the shafts in the wrong position - that's an external fix, not internal.

Hey, whattya know, another Santa Rosa Pelican!

You can go thru the dash via the hole after pulling out the Speedo and clock.

My first thought was just like what Kyle said, but that still would have the wipers going down first, then going up, and they would then need to be parked way up higher on the windshield to accomplish that pattern.

So try to take a look at the arm that goes around and around, attached to the wiper motor back under the dash. You can get there by removing the tach and clock. There are many threads/posts/tech articles about wiper reversal procedures, so you might want to do a search on that subject: wiper reversal, so they'll be parked on the passenger side when off.

Here's what I would do:

Pull out tach and clock. Turn wipers on/off until stopped in the way-too-low position, then turn them off. turn off the key ignition, too.

You'll have to do this mostly by feel, because you can't really see these parts too well from inside the car..
Go under or around that cardboard cover thing that covers the wiper arm mechanism, and remove the (I think it's a) 10mm nut on the wiper motor. Be careful, be slow, don't drop it don't lose it way down in there.

Then peel/pry the arm off the motor, and move the little arm so you can see the wipers move to be in the parked position that you want. Either just a little higher, or maybe even over to the other side, if you'd like, now would be a good time.

Then re-install the little arm onto the shaft, when your wipers are where you want them when parked. Because the motor is in it's off/done position, so now your wipers will be in synch with the cycle of the motor assembly.

Replace the nut, (don't drop it again) and you should be good to go.

Good catch! (still waking up!)

Wonder how they wound up boogered so. Somewhere along the line, somebody set the drive on the motor wrong, and bandaided with the arms' position.

You can find pictures of what to do in the tech articles about reverse-parking the wipers.

Thanks Guys,

I'll check out the article on moving the wipers to the other side. And you are right I can move the wipers up, but when they stop they are way up the windshield. Kyle what is your 911?

Jim.

I've got the Bentley book, but it really does not deal with the problem...it is more on removal and install. But at least that will show me where to look for the motor.

Hi George - I have a 1980SC coupe, Prussian Blue.

Here's a good writeup, no pics though.
Reversed my wipers this morning, just 10 minutes
