I recommend using the door repair plates available at Pelican. They are used along with the style of door stay that does not have the built-in studs, but rather uses bolts that go through two holes in the door stay.

I would also recommend grinding off at least part of the two humps on the door stay rod. Those humps apply a great deal of back-and-forth pressure agains the door bulkhead, which causes the door sheet metal to rip, over time.

Now, to your questions: The pin you mentioned must be driven out, with a suitable drift and hammer. The door stay itself is fastened by two Allen bolts, at least in the case of the stay that takes through-bolts. You can see the fasteners through the little hole that the stay penetrates.

You will need to remove the interior door panel, since the stay is removed and installed from behind. Perhaps just removing the speaker will provide access. Anybody know?

Thumbs up Check out Wayne's 101 book - he knows.

There's a very good article on this whole proceedure in plain English including photos. Note also the tip for reinforcing plates.
