cannot find neutral

OK,

I just put the motor back in after a trans swap in the '84 carrera with 915.
I needed to move the car, but I could not get neutral for the life off me. The input shaft will move fore and aft but not rotate. I think I have 3rd and 4th because I was able to roll the car with help even though in was obviously still engaged.

Some points to consider are that there is still no oil in the trans and the clutch is not hooked up. I wouldn't think either of these would be the problem, are they?

I bought this 915 from somebody who listed it on Rennlist and lists parts here too. He said that it had been opened and everything looked good. I got a good vibe from him, but you never know.

you need to pop off the shift guide plate and then line up the slots in both shift rods so they are in the neutral position. i'll bet one of them is forward or backward from the other. if not, then the 5th/reverse shaft is not in neutral. to get it out of 5th, you can access the end of the shaft thru the same hole, and pop it inwards. if it's in reverse, remove the backup light switch and push in on the activator pin.

Pics of rods

Thought I would post these pics of the shifter rods outside of the case so anyone can get an idea of what they are looking at inside the hole. I placed the selector rod back in place to give you a perspective of what you see inside. None of the rods would move in my 901. It had been sitting for 10yrs. Turns out the detents were all gummed up. WD40 to the rescue. (You can see the oil line inside the case). Ever read a msds on WD40? It's mostly stoddard solvent. Frt of trans to left in pics
