Steering wheel squeak

have developed a severe steering wheel squeak over the past 6-8 weeks.

This is a light but grating squeak from the wheel itself as it turns, do not believe that it has anything to do with the steering column. I have no upwards or sideways movement should I pull on the wheel.

Have taken the wheel off and lubed twice, ok for a little while, then comes right back.

Any insight appreciated, it is driving me nuts!

Regards, Glen

What are you lubing? Also, factory wheel/hub?

It's the horn contact ring and column contact wearing in. The ring wears a groove in the contact. Then the plastic edges of the ring rub against the contact and make the grating sound. One fix is to sand down the plastic edges to minimize contact. I tried filling in the groove in the contact with solder but that only lasted 3 to 4 months. The contact is NLA from anyone but Zims. They have an a/m version that works well and is cheap. -J

Thanks guys, I have an all original setup.

The horn contact has a nice groove worn into (and through) it, I bent the contact so that the groove wasn't in contact with the wheel - basically made the hump a little further along its length, so had discounted this as a cause.

The noise definitely sounds like plastic on plastic or light metal.

I'll revisit the contacts again,

many thanks
