SSI installation setback........

The oil line that goes from the underside of the engine shown in the following pictures is giving me some installation problem. As you tighten the big nut, the other end of the oil line swings further out more thus preventing the installation of the passenger side SSI headers.

The picture below is the correct orientation for the oil line (nut not installed).

A closer look at the compression fitting. The compression end is some what cocked or misaligned and this will cause leak.

Tried to bend the tube but had no luck. And bending the tube while attached to the crankcase is not advisable because it could break the threaded section and would result to a catastrophe. I have installed several of these oil line before using used and brand new oil lines for similar projects and never had encountered any problem until today. The compression fitting end is a few degrees off to fit properly. Probably made in Asia!!!!

Aside from getting another oil line, what could do I need to get this oil line to connect and mount correctly?

These SSI are probably the last few sets made in America.

Note: The big 36-mm nut is not installed thus allowing the passenger side headers to be mounted temporarily. Any suggestion, recommendation, comments are highly appreciated. Thanks.

Tony

Mine was giving me fits as well when i installed m SSI's.
I ended up loosley fitting the oil line, installng the SSI's and then going back and tightening the big nut on the oil line. Still had to push the line over some to get it to mount to the nut by the oil cooler on the other end properly. I agree, the fit is not great.

When I got my B&B system many years ago it came with a flexible braided oil line - I reused it with my SSI's. I know this is within the 'get another oil line' direction, but at least you won't end up with another line that has the same problem...

Tighten the line so the flange/flare is in the correct position the apply some heat to the curved area and bend it into place.

I just did mine with an oil line from our host - no problems.

Can you return that one as defective?

Shy of returning it i would heat it at the arrow ( put something between the pipe and the case to keep the spacing there now ) and bend it to fit.

John,

I tried bending the metal oil line:
a). Off the engine........need to have a very firm grip (vise) and good leverage to achieve bending it. Tube keep sliding out.
b). Installed on the engine block..........bending is feasible but stopped doing it. I was afraid to over stress the threaded section on the crankcase and damage the crankcase fitting.

And decided to quit and posted this problem to the forum. I have to be very careful in doing this job because I could not afford to break anything from the crankcase. I'm charging the car owner $20 per hour for labor that included engine drop, installation, SSI installation, oil return tubes replacement, CIS tune-up, engine detailing, etc. for peanuts. I increased the rate from last year's $10 per hour.

I'll go back to work and try bending it in situ. Will keep you guys posted. Thanks.

Tony

if you put a block of hardwood just north of the red arrow in the photo above, you will be taking most of the pressure off the threads, add some heat, you won't have a problem.

that being said, I've made some minor adjustments without the block, just some heat and gentle pressure to get the line-up I was looking for.

Backdate oil lines

I slightly bent my oil line and was still worried about case contact. I ended up adding a small piece of an old fan belt (v towards oil line) for a press fit to prevent case contact.

Over 2 years and it has stayed put.

OZ,

Yes. It is a 2-IN/1-out Dansk muffler.
